Had my 90 for 2/3 months now and has been running fine...

Till sunday when I went to tesco and could not start it again, The starter motor spun but the engine did not kick over.

A phone call later and one very gruff AA man and a pry bar. He got it started again but said it only has a 50% chance of starting as half the teeth are missing of the fly wheel (I guess I have been very lucky up till now) and that it need's a new gear box.

Now I am not very macnical but do I need a new gear box? I was sort of confused as he just spat all this info at me in one sentence then jumped back in the van and drove off with out a by your leave.

He started off buy saying that the fly wheel needed replaceing as it had half the teeth missing and to do that you would have to take the gear box out and that it would need a new one.

As it started off as if the gear box was just in the way and needed to come out to the job, but then turned into taking the gear box out would brake it and I would need a new one?

Just trying to get an idea of how much this is going to cost me and if this is the time to do an upgrade if i am going to have to get a new gear box.

Mine is a late 85, 90 with 2.5 D NA, and I had thought at some point of putting in a 200tdi and gear box as atm it does 60 at best (which tbh is fine for me most of the time) Can i just up grade the gear box alone for a future engine upgrade or do I need to do both at once?

Do I even need a new gear box or can I jsut replace the fly wheel?

Thanks for advice in advance.

starter ring gear is attached to fly wheel part no 568431 can be replaced or new or used flywheel fitted ,to do this either engine or gearbox needs to come out to get to fly wheel, 200 tdi will fit and run with your gearbox and wouldnt need changing unless worn

The fly wheel to the best of my knowledge bolts on so you should be able to just replace that. Do a search on here and get a bit more info, then if your need more post up again. Might be lucky and it is just the starter motor.

Thanks for the advice will get some one to have a look at it.

I think it was more that the AA guy was having a bad / busy day, he seemed in a bit of a mood. When he drove in I was made up to seem him after 10 mins when they said and hour and 10 mins, but it turned out there where two other people broken down in the tesco car park who he went to first then followed one home and came back.

So did not really understand what he said.

Why would I want to change the clutch? upgrade it or for some other reason?

If its apart it makes sense to replace it. I just did mine when I converted NA to 200Tdi. Nothing worse than having everything apart again!!
