Replaced the old fuel pump yesterday and now the Disco II TD5 starts after three turns or so. But it starts immediately after it's been running on idle. I have not had the opportunity to take it out of the back yard yet for a good run so I don't know if this is what is needed but after leaving it overnight it required three or so turns again to fire up this afternoon. Any thoughts please very welcome.

Did no-one mention injector washers / seals?

Cheers

Thank you. Short answer is No, But that's me. The car has been running superbly until a week ago: very noisy pump and getting increasingly difficult ti start in one day. Managed to limp home via an independent Landy parts supplier in Cannock where I picked up an off-the-shelf pump and fitted it yesterday. I have to say it's making a very similar noise to the old one. Should I take it in for diagnostics or do you think if I get a few miles on a run it might improve?

Have a look at this link, KB had a problem this week. There are a few links to vids that may be of help.

Only things I can add to check are:

Fuel filter, change it for a good known brand new one then purge procedure..
Mine had a failed Crank sensor , but that stopped the car when it was warm. Cooled down and would restart, then stop when warm.
Mine had trouble starting , I changed the Injector washers and seals, then it started fine.

Cheers

Cheers for that. I'll try to get that done before the weekend and put the results here.

Managed to get a twenty mile journey in today but the new fuel pump seems to make little difference to the start-up. Finally got home and turned ignition key off and three seconds later started the engine immediately. Turned it off and fifteen seconds later tried to restart it but failed. I noticed my fuel level down from where I thought it should be and am now wondering if there is a leak. Filter change Monday.

Hi, As a priority check your oil level to see if it's rising and smelling of diesel. If so the injector seals are letting diesel into the oil and it may run away on you. Another common area for fuel leaks are the Fuel Pressure Regulator and the "Green" fuel pipe.
HTH,

Cheers Griff: success today - picked it up at lunchtime from my local Landy indy and he'd changed filters and injector seals and it's now vroom vroom and starting like new. What a relief. Amazing how much help you get on the LZ - thanks all.
PS: added bonus: the indy man said he'd also had a god check of the chassis - really good condition. I'm booked in get her Dinitroled in Feb.

Glad you're sorted. Yes get the chassis protected inside and out!

Cheers: after my last experience earlier this year - Disco 2 with a disintegrated chassis - it put my off them for life (two months of withdrawal symptoms actually) and then I met another one and it started all over again. So I'm going to spend a bit on this one and believe that it's good enough to keep. The Dinitrol treatment takes from a Friday to Friday and is quite expensive but given the excellent state of the chassis at present, I'd like to keep it that way and Dinitrol give a five year guarantee.
