Hi, I bought a new Freelander 2 GS TD4 Manual 2011 MY before xmas . Im now 1200 miles in and have started looking at the fuel economy. The book says a combined figure of 45.6 mpg, but im actually getting approx 35 mpg which is quite disappointing.

Is anyone else getting disappointing figures from this new supposedly more efficient model ? Just wondering if there is actually a fault somewhere.

Admittedly it does have a full spare and roof rails fitted, but I cant see that they should make that much difference. I've also not been filling the tank over half way in order to keep the weight down. And in terms of my driving style / terrain my last car was getting 36 MPG combined as opposed to a book figure of 39.8.

if its a new car, the engine probably hasn't bed in yet everything will still be tight so mpg will be down, when you have done a few thousands miles it should improve

I can't believe that anyone actually expects to achieve the mpg that the manufacturers claim!
Alright Victor Meldrew. I dont actually expect to get the same figures the manufacturer quotes, but I would of thought that with careful driving it should get 85 - 90% of what is quoted, which is what I have seen with previous vehicles. An efficiency loss of 25% sounds like a fault to me.
The cold weather is a good point.

take it back then and ask em to improve the fuel economy, thats what your warranties for.landrover have nothing addded to the car at all, when you put roofbars on a car that has the aerodynamics of a brick it makes a big difference to the economy. all manufacturers lie through their collective teeth about mpg. it's just landrover are bigger bull****ters.

Don't be so cynical. In my experience cars get pretty close to the quoted figure. With my 52 plate Freelander S In the technical data in the back of my owners hanbook for 2.0 litre diesel (manual box) it says 37.2 mpg for combined combined cycle - and surprise, surprise, THAT's EXACTLY WHAT I GET. Cheers Paul

I agree, as long as you drive carefully and minimise weight and use of a/c, etc it should get close to the book figures. Roof rails at the very most should cause about 5% degridation of performance (there are many ultra fuel efficient cars on the road with roof rails fitted !)
I think i'll take it back to the dealer as I bet it needs an engine management sw patch. It had a patch a day after I took delivery for the pressure sensor in the dpf, so im betting the dealers don't totally understand this new 150ps TD4.

35mpg from a FL2 - in my dreams.

Our 2008 Auto in the book gives 35mpg.
Used to give 30-32mpg.
Fitted roof rails and ladder on rear door 29-30mpg
Fitted MT tyres 27mpg.

Going quickly 25-26 mpg, cruise control set at 60 = 28mpg until you leave the motoway.

Towing 1200kg -at 60 24mpg, -at 70 20mpg, -on autobahn 16-18mpg(don't ask)

Getting close to Disco3 levels

Bearing in mind the 2006 auto with chip and roof rails managed 29-30mpg, 24mpg towing.
But the FL2 is quicker :)

My 07 manual gives me around 30 in town and about 37 on a run (it's currently showing 33.8 on the screen). I can get it above 40 if I'm gentle. The new one should be better, but a lot depends on how you drive it.

mine shows 31.9 average but its the 190 hp model auto and new well 2800 miles my last one with the standard engine did 27.9 all the time 28k on the clock

nande2000uk,

How are you calculating the MPG? You say you only fill the tank half full. It should be done by filling the tank until the pump cuts off, resetting the trip computer to 0, then start driving. When next filling up, fill up again until the pump cuts off, take a note of the litres used, and calculate against the trip computer mileage. Using the on board MPG reading is never a sure MPG.

Fill up when the fuel low light comes on, make a note of the litres entered (thirty as its a 68 litre tank), then zero the trip. Then run till the fuel light is on again. Strangely the trip computer is actually quite accurate and agrees with the figure worked out manually.

You gorra brand new motor and ur worried about mpg? ffs

It's my first post!

I've just taken a Freelander 2 TD4 out for a test drive today (never even driven a Land Rover before today!) and over the 100 mile test drive, it averaged 34.6 mpg. Considering my much lighter, more aerodynamic, FWD only and not any quicker V70 D5 would only have returned 2mpg more, I think 34.6mpg is blooming marvellous :D If you think this is bad, I took out a BMW 520d touring (official figure 55.4mpg) and I struggled to achieve 31mpg over two hours driving!

The official fuel consumption figures are calculated under such completely contrived and irrelevant conditions that the figures are as good as meaningless.

Tigger.

I've complained about mine since I've had it (Nov 2010). Mine gets the poor figures mentioned in the above posts. Was told (after I bought it) that it will improve after 7000 miles - It didn't. Currently hovers around 29MPG.
