Disco 2 Fuel consumption, Can this be right ???

Hi all
Vehicle is a 2002 Discovery Td5 Auto, not had it long and think the fuel consumption is to high as i'm only getting 12 mpg .
Now i knew it wasn't going to compare with my old 200 Tdi but surely 12 cannot be right, the vehicle has just had a new brand new 15p head and gasket set and also a full service, all oils, filters etc, figures are from about 60% town and 40% motorways.
Can you good peeps give your opinion on this and what i can do (apart from sell it ).

Does it smoke like a chimney and do you drive it like you stole it?

And are you towing a 3ton trailer?

Nope i drive it like a old man. and there is no smoke at all.

No but the wife says i'm a bit chubby.
There are not even any rear seats in it (got 2 large dogs),

I've had a 110 with V8 on gas and a Classic 3.9 Rangie on gas and also a Disco 2 on gas and none of them did any more than 15 driving very gently, Petrol or gas returned 12 to 14 usually, Bought a 200tdi

Dash currently says 19.9mpg on my 4.0 thor but i don't drive 80mph everywhere

When the fuel light comes on i reset the trip mileage, then put in £20 or £40 worth and reset the trip, noting distance to garage (reserve fuel)
Then when the fuel light comes back on note the mileage deducting distance to garage.
Then convert litres to gallons and divide miles by gallons, I have been doing this for a few weeks now and am getting consistent numbers of 40 miles for every £20 or 50p a mile if i realy want to scare myself.

Later ones are better, the old 3,5 wasn't too bad in a rover but pulling a Landy it drank fuel, My 3.5 110 used fork lift truck bottles and did about 95 miles on one, I didn't drive fast in any of my V8s but could never get any where near 20mpg even trying very hard.

I used to brim the D2 every time and trip the milege, also brimmed the gas to calculate that mpg as well

Just read the first post and it's a TD5

Should be getting twice that at least

Your fuel light won't be that accurate.. you really need to fill the tank until it clicks off, use at least half, then fill again until it clicks off, ideally using the same fuel pump
Then you know precisely(within a drop or 2) how much you've used and over what distance.
Half a tank should give you a good variation of roads, but the more fuel used, the more accurate the result

Had a friend who was a security guard, swapped my gas bottle at weekends for free

Are you sure there are no fuel leaks? They could be anywhere! Including into the oil in the sump

Has it been chipped? I get around the 25-30 mark depending on journey length. Mostly I do 6 miles to/from work which isn't good, and the occasional 120 mile round trip to see the mistress...or such...

Pretty certain no leaks and oil level not gone up or has a "dieseley smell", and also not been chipped, although i have thought about it, just worried fuel consumption will go up even more.
kermit rr I get your point about filling it up which i will try but as the fuel light seems to come on at about the same distance covered can it be that far out ???.

It's all about percentages. Is the fuel gauge accurate to within a few ml? I bet it's more likely to within a few pints, which over £20-30 litres of diesel is a big margin of error

Very good point , I know on my old 200Tdi the light would come on and if I ignored it would go of again and then come back on 10-15 miles later, just not that brave in this one
