New Disco / Range Rover Sport

I don't see the point of a Range Rover Sport. If you want speed and have that amount of money to spend, buy a chuffin' fast car! A normal Rangie, yes, but the Sport is a big no no in my eyes. One for the Beckhams et al, not a serious off-road tool. Why pay all that dosh for maintenance and fuel if you ain't going to need the mechanics of it????

As for the Disco 3, it looks too much like a Rangie crossed with a Transit. I MUCH preferred the styling of the Disco 2, the new one looks cack and will date in no time - it already looks an older design than its predecessor in my book. Then there's the stupidly over the top electronic bollocks which is going to be a NIGHTMARE on the used market. Would you want to buy a 5 year old Disco 3...let alone a 10 year old one? Bring back the old Landy designers!!!! They hardly put a foot wrong in decades.

Unfortunately, like everything else, LR have been driven by market forces. No longer do they make their money from people wanting off-road vehicles, they make their money from people who have far too much money and want the latest cool "SUV".

Personally I like the RR Sport, and although I wouldn't buy one myself (I'd get a real RR!) the marketing position seems obvious - in line with the Porker Cayenne, albeit a bit cheaper and slower, looks-wise it certainly competes.

Disco 3 - well when I told the guy at the LR garage what I thought he wasn't too happy, and I didn't even mention the looks! Like everyone else has said, it seems to be a mix of different vehicles. It looks weird, it just doesn't flow. I think they took designs from different people, and rather than upset any of them just stuck all their ideas together into one car.

I am new to this scene too and have recently purchased a new Defender 90. Why you may ask since I live in Suburbia?

Well here is the logic. I have a 3yr old SAAB 95 Estate - very comfy, very quick and carries 5 and luggage on the rare occasions it is required. It is worth bugger all as trade-in.

We were looking at buying a 4x4 after an off road day earlier last year but could find nothing with the iconic charisma of the defender. I could have sold the SAAB and bought a new Disco 3 but whilst it would perform both functions (comfy long distance carriage and off-road ability) it doesn't have the rugged honesty that only a Defender can provide. The fact that the dash is 70s in style (if not earlier), the heater is crap, my shoulder rubs on the B pillar etc. is all part of the experience. I've kept the SAAB and bought the 90. Buying a Disco 3 would have been the logical choice but not the passionate one.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that if you want the hearty experience that owning a Defender brings then buy a Defender. If you want a modern 4x4 with all modern comforts and little of the character, buy a new Disco. It's a matter of marketing. The only hope is that Land Rover will continue to provide for those of us in the Defender niche!

If you buy either a Disco 3 or a RR Sport, think of the time you will waste worrying about every dent and paint chip! If you buy a Defender you will only have to worry about whether it starts!

first freelanders now discos!! where will it stop i suppose after the disco we'll move on to the range rover, then where bmw's or that porche thing??.. fashion statement or not,, its your money buy wtf you like..

here here! we all need different things out of our landies... I like em all, just they all wouldnt be practical for me except my little freelander (thats never broken down on me) ooops done it now, and with friday the 13th tomorrow! GULP!

better keep that quiet !! landrover will recall it to install some dodgy ecu's.
