hi one n all iv just got a disco and i mean just drove it home lol n from been in a fiat stilo i must say i like the disco's:)

so any way probs im gonna start on:

gear stick over to the left witch from what iv read is a plate and spring and possible the other plastic bushings witch il prob just replace the lot but am i write on what im thinking il need?

its a bit awkward gettin it in 1st and if i dont double clutch when i got the second it has a little crunch but rest of gears are quiet so im guessin a bit of syncro mesh wear there but im gonna drop the oil and give it fresh as im sure its old as hell n manky as as the engine oil is lol

but what oil does the gear box want in it?

and diff's

and is it a seperate fill for the transfer box?

il leave it there for now and thanx for any help and sorry that youve prob replyed a million times to the same question but i did have a seach:doh:

thanx all

there is a bias plate that is there to hold gear stick in line with 3rd and 4th,it breaks,to repair remove centre consol, rubber diaphram gear box top cover 2 x screw ,4 x bolt holding bias plate be care ful with two rears as these hold springs as well ,weld up or replace refit set springs with plate to align gear stick with 3/4 plate has slotted hole for this

Which model Disco have you got?
according to his profile 300tdi

gear box dextron 2 atf

I don't wanna start the whole atf/mtf in a manual box debate, All I'm gonna say is I've tried both and the mtf works MUCH better in mine.

The transfer box and diffs both take ep 90 and yes there is a seperate fill for the transfer box.

about the crunch in 2nd....change a bit slower and you'll just get used to it.

Oh and :welcome2: by the way, where in Lincs are you? My family all live up there.

ive nothing against mtf for some people they do find gear changes better some dont, its just alot more exspensive ,in my experience ive never found when stripping and rebuilding lt77s or r380s either oil better than the other in long term protection ,mtf been synthetic will hold its lubrication qualities longer but by that time its so contaminated that wear occurs, most brgs i see are prematurely worn with dirty oil,and since mtf came out it hasnt changed either is good as long as its changed regular, whicvh is something land rover and alot of garages dont do baulk ring wear doesnt also seem to have improved on r380s since mtf was introduced but some people do find it improves gear selection

cheers for the replys all

the thing that i cant figure in my head is that if these springs go what makes you have to go accross the truck and punch the leg of the passenger to get 1st n 2nd?

i think that the plastic cage has prob gone aswell so ill replace the lot ie new cageand bias plate and springs and give it an oil change to and make it nice n fresh.

im near louth in lincolnshire where the green lanes are long n muddy lol

and famous four is a nice loacal landy place for all my spares needs lol

when do cambelts need to be done on these 300 tdi?

i changed the plate and springs following advice/instruction from members on here and it was a doddle.
just make sure you have the correct size rivets to put the cover back over the gearbox.

in reality i have saved a fair few quid by following advice from this site and doing all of my own servicing/repairs.

We have a 94 300tdi Mine also has second gear crunch lol. You just learn to dribe with it, after a short while you will get it right and won't grinde anymore. I belive its a common fault with the r380 box. As to first gear, make sure nothing has dropped down inside the gearstick gater. Ours was doing this, strugging with 1st and 3rd, turned out to be a 10p stuck in there, removed that gear changes became nice and easy, althou 2nd gear crunch is still there. Best bit of advice i can give you, which i got from one of the wiser members on here is to treat the gear changes as if you were in a truck, nice and slow. Don't try to race through the gears.
Good luck to you and enjoy your disco.

well i had a sneaky peak in the top of the box today and found out that my selctor yoke bush ftc2203 is nolonger living there lol it has moved to the box its self in lots of little bits so i think il get a new one of those lol as its steel on steel and has alot of play in it so that why my gear change is so bad the upper plastic cup is fine and it is now fitted with a new plate and springs so back to the landy shop for the other bush and gear box oil.

am i write in thinking 3 litres will be enough in it?

and ill stick atf i think as its cheaper for a start lol

and then get sum ep90 for the diffs n transfer case but how much of that will i need?

thanks all
