hi all
hope somebody can help me out! currently own a 98 freelander xedi which is great apart from needing a new clutch at £450 and a vcu at £350ish(ongoing problem). i've just seen a 95/96 N 300tdi disco for sale wiv 122k, 8mth test and 4mth tax for £2100 and am thinking of swapping to a real 4x4. wot do i need to look out for-its ad a clutch and cambelt in last 10k. overall its tidy apart from rust in usual places.
any help gratefully received

You didn't say whether it was at a traders or a private sale, but £2100 seems an awful lot of cash for it, it would have to be a minter to be worth that. At most I'd reckon on it's true value being around £1500, they are literally going for peanuts at the moment. Have a look at autotrader for a heads up on similar spec, year, mileage and condition.

Biggest problem you'll find is rust, check the boot floor, wheel arches, inner wings, rear door arches, rear crossmember, sill's, diff pan's and passenger footwell (water ingress). Water leak's at alpine windows, sunroof's.

Make sure you see her start from cold and take her for a good run to see how the gearbox behave's (2nd gear & reverse can be iffy plus it's £500+ for a recon box). The engines are good for 250k + if well looked after.

thanx for the replies.
forgot to mention that i'd be px-ing the moneypit in with £200 to pay. seems a lot cheaper than the £800 or more(also needs exhaust and passenger window and s/roof fixing) to sort out the hippo!
the disco started ok from cold and drove fine from cold with gearbox feeling ok. checked diff-lock and that worked too!. bodywork in vgc apart from couple of rust spots but nothing major, sills outriggers etc are all ok but not looked at boot floor. some small rust spots on inner wings but nothing too bad. even better, all the electrics worked!!!!!
will ave another look at it 2mora

Have a look at this site for a valuation on your Freelander (I based it's value on mileage of 100k) and see if your going to be quids in

WiseBuyer's Guides - Land Rover Freelander (1997-06) mileage adjusted used car prices

At the end of the day your potentially swopping one moneypit for another (the joy's of LR ownership), but a much better one:D.

What spec/model Disco is she? Working electrickery is a novelty indeed, my Disco's electrics drove me to drink last week:beer2::eek:, all good now though...touch wood!

yeah i know they all moneypits but at least the disco is more "friendly" when it comes to repairs, everyfing on hippo too technical too do at home-well it is for me anyway!!!
looking at that site, not gonna do too bad out of the deal i hope

she's a 95/96 N reg 300 TDi in green metallic(not sure which one tho)wiv alloys n 235/70's n a factory towbar n thats it-no other fancy bits too break unlike the hippo where everything is starting to go.
ave sat and worked out wot needs mending on hippo and so far have got :
clutch
vcu/ird/rear diff-not sure which yet but think vcu(its running in mondo mode at mo)
hdc/abs lights occasionally
discs n pads
exhaust-needs full system
rear door glass motor
sunroof not working
passenger elec window motor
drivers elec mirror
nsr central locking motor
full service inc cambelt
1 glow pug behind diesel pump-whoever thought of putting it there!!

there i think thats it. anything i buy cant have that much wrong compared to hippo can it!?!?!?!
