I'm seriously thinking of going for a new defender and my strategy is to hang on to it for 10-12 years, with that in mind do you lads ( and ladettes) think that the new machine will be up to it? I mean is the chassis etc designed to be replacable in the series-like tradition? Will this new transit engine be up to it? Is there too much dependance onc omputers / diagnostics etc e.g. the 200 & 300 tdi vs there TD5 seems to be an increase in the levels of computer management - which to me means dealerships and the £££££'s they charge. Any help would be appreciated.

I am pretty sure that every new model of Landy has had similar things said about it in terms of being too complex compared with the earlier model.

I have a 4 years old Td5 and I don't see why it wont last forever with regular maintenance.

I drove a new 110 for 3 hours a couple of weeks ago and it was fantastic, the engine is brilliant, I am sure there are plenty of transits with several hundred thousand mile on them. Again I don't see any reason why it wont last for a very long while.

PS you might want to post in the defender forum rather than the series one?

To hang onto a landy long term, I wouldn't trust anything Land Rover are currently throwing out the factory.

I'd rather buy a recent rest-of-world-spec 300tdi (like from nene overland) or build (or have built) something to your exact spec on a galvanised chassis. All costs about the same and can cost much less if you're scottish like me.

Building an "everlasting" 90 masel at the moment and can guarantee it'll outlast my 2002 110 td5.

Thats great news! I already have a disco 300tdi 142k but don't expect to get another 10 years out of it. I'm in Ireland and they government have changed the emmission levels so if you don't buy a 4x4 before july 08 you're ****ed in terms of road tax ( it will double on a Landrover ). So I hoped to buy new and hang on for ten or more years on the new model which will always be taxed at the old price.
