Hey guys.
So I’ve had this 90 for only about 3 weeks and have given it a lot of love. She’s a South African delivery 1986. The guy I bought it from had only put 50 miles on it in 4 years driving it occasionally from his house to his job. When I purchased it, he was unsure that it would make the 30 mile trip to my house. I had faith and took my chances. She ran pretty well, but spat and sputtered every now and then, but never failed to start, although the throttle shaft bushings were seeping petrol. I’ve put 700 miles on her in 2.5 weeks, have installed a new carb and she now purrs like a kitten, and is now on daily duty. I’m just quite excited to have her and think she’s excited to be run properly, and wanted to share. Cheers!

Helo, looks a nice truck [if one in avatar] regular use is good.Plenty of info about keeping old landies going on this site.
John.

Congratulations, it would be nice to see a few photos of her, coming from Africa it should be a very sound rust free landy.

Yeah my avatar is the front view, here’s a couple more pics. She’s been repainted before, though the outside paint is a bit thin and shows some wear, the inside is in great shape, (I’ll take pics and upload later). She does have some surface rust on the frame, and a couple serious holes on the bottom of the right side frame rail, but as a mechanic by trade and having welding experience, I feel that I can repair those spots without issue.
The guy I bought it from imported it to the US from SA 4 years ago, so I’ve no clue as to her true history, or what she been through. I only know that she runs, drives, and stops, and that I Love her!

Nice Landy. What’s the story with the UK reg plate?

Nice Landy. What’s the story with the UK reg plate?
The vehicle that registration belongs to is a 1986 landy still registered in the UK, MOT expired 25/11/2013 and tax expired 19/11/12. No export marker. (from gov.uk check mot history web)

Having looked on the MOT history the defender looks a bit dodgy, obviously not a S African car and has a lot of welding and other defects in its history consistant with a hard life in the UK.
You can check out MOT history on here by putting the front Registration number in and pressing the MOT history, if site works from USA.
https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/

The op can cross check the recorded defects and compare to his vehicle, could help identify it. Also it had a mileage drop at one point between MOT's, registration details show it as a green car but MOT record shows a red vehicle. Also, isn't it too early to be a defender? - thought they came later c1990?

The UK plate was on it when I got it, it has the legal South Carolina plate on the back. The previous owner told me South Africa, that’s what I was going on. Your evidence appears to show other wise. I can tell she’s had some welding done on the bulkhead, and the drivers door doesn’t quite line up right. It would be nice to know her real history. It does appear to have been red at some point. It is a 1986, so technically not a Defender, just a 90.
I thought folks just lumped them in with the Defender lot since it’s basically the same. Thanks for the info guys.

The seller may have not known it’s actual history. Either way it’s good to know where she IS from. It doesn’t matter how she came to the states really, I’m just excited to have found her, and think I got a good deal for what I paid. Sure she has flaws, all of which can be fixed. I’ve only had her for 3 weeks, and have driven her daily.
