The rear wheeldrive mercs/bmws are terrible in the snow, even damp manhole covers are enough to activate the traction when pulling away swiftly from junctions.Is there a particular problem with Mercs/BMW's in the snow?
Yes they are RWD, but the majority of cars I've owned over the decades (back to the 'sixties) have been rear drive & in those days snow, of varying depths, was the rule rather than the exception come winter. In one particularly bad period during the early 'nineties I travelled extensively in both suburban & rural areas of Essex in a RWD Toyota estate fitted with what was then known as 'town & country' tyres on the rear wheels & never became stuck. I've lived mainly in rural areas & never had a real problem with RWD & snow, but a few years ago my front drive Mondeo turned out to be totally useless on any snow covered slope.
Our current 'daily' is an old E39 auto fitted with Michelin Cross-Climate tyres & I'm going to get a pair of Snow-Socks just in case as it was only those that kept the Ford moving
