Hi
New caliper and brake pads fitted on rear driver's side, but now keeps getting hot....could this be an ABS problem???
Any help much appreciated...Thanks

Weren't advised too....but why would that make a difference to the problem?
Thanks

it might not make a difference to the problem it'll make a difference by wrapping you around a tree

ALWAYS replace brake components in axle sets, otherwise one side of your vehicle stops better than the other, which obviously creates problems

I thought this site was to try and help other landrover drivers...everytime I come on this site, all i get is cocky replies! Where does it say in the Landrover Bible that you have to replace both calipers at the same time? Brake pads were replaced on each side.
My question was....New caliper and brake pads fitted on rear driver's side, but now keeps getting hot....could this be an ABS problem???
If anyone out there with some constructive advice, please leave me a comment.

What the guys are saying is true, you always replace friction parts such as discs and pads in complete sets, they nearly always come in sets anyway, but it is a safety issue that you must observe. Calipers and cylinders generally do not need to be replaced in sets, although if one side has gone, the other won't be far away.

Regarding one caliper getting hotter than the other, that can be down to many things: why was the caliper changed to start with? What is the condition of the caliper on the other side, and although you changed the caliper on one side, did you change the pads on the other side?

What model and year vehicle?

Peter

Thanks Listerdiesel
I may not have explained myself properly (women driver!!!)...had the brake caliper replaced few months back (rear driver's side) along with new brake pads on both sides. The reason changed caliper was that it was getting hot and were advised to replace it (as only just bought vehicle), but noticed today that it is getting hot again, same side. Have been told that it could be the abs system, due to fault occuring so quickly again, is this possible? Model Discovery TD5 - 2001. Many thanks

Not wanting to doubt what you are saying but is it possible it's the wheel bearing getting hot and not the brakes?

Is there any chattering noises coming from the abs when driving? Have you got an abs or traction control light on on the dash?

Thanks Listerdiesel

No problem, sometime the smallest things can help with diagnostics.

There are a few things that can cause the problem:

Discoveries have the means to apply the brakes through the ABS in wheel spinning conditions, but obviously not in normal driving. So if this was the case then you would have a fault in the ABS system, possibly identifiable through a fault code.

A failed wheel bearing might be able to allow the hub to cant a bit and cause overheating, but I think you'd hear the noise and realise that there is a problem.

A damaged caliper mounting, perhaps caused by a blow to the hub assy at some time would cause continuous rubbing, and that's the sort of problem you are looking for, but normally the wheel would catch the blow rather than the axle tube end.

A brake pipe that was damaged or blocked would cause the problem, as fluid would not be able to flow and allow the calipers to release properly. 2001 is not that old, so perished flexible pipes that have swollen shouldn't be a problem unless the wrong fluid has been put in there, which is unlikely.

I'd suggest that you need to get the vehicle checked over mechanically by someone who is knowledgeable with Landy mechanicals, and try to pinpoint the fault by elimination. It might be something stupidly simple, but also could be a real sod to track down.

Hi

Thanks for all advice, booked vehicle in at Landrover Specialists for them to try and sort, will post required repair after sorted....and the dreaded cost !!!

Thanks again

Right, took vehicle to Landrover specialist....not sure of problem put on diagnostic machine - everything OK with ABS, traction control etc. Decided to change the caliper and flexi hose to try and ilimiate the problem ....cost of £118 ....one week on and the disc is still get hot after travelling short distance. Before we change discs and pads on both sides are there any other ideas? Thanks

Thanks Ratty! Going to have the discs and pads (on both sides!) changed tomorrow.....hopefully this will sort the problem, keep fingers crossed!!

Just thought I would let you know what the problem was....if anyone interested!!
New brake discs and pads fitted, but the problem was with the other side, brakes weren't working correctly and the other side was compensating (apparently) causing them to get hotter. Everything sorted now, with a new caliper and brake discs and pads. Main issue....my husband is happy again!!!!
