I think winter killed my bat, and was wondering when i get a new one can i just ask for a defender bat or do i need like super big battery.

I have to get a jump home from work last night and it was dead, did charge a bit on the way home but not enought to start it this morning, not sure if it might just need a full charge?

I ask this becuse the battery that is in atm is a huge twice the normal size thing that says something about it being a carvan battery on the side.

C reg 2.5na

Caravan battery suggests leisure battery which isn't intended for high current discharges such as starting.

The defender tray will allow some pretty big batteries, get the one with the biggest CCA and Ah you can afford, I have an 800CCA 80Ah battery in my 90.

You need a minimum of about 550CCA, but bigger is better, if you can afford a 1000CCA 100Ah then go for it. I usually just go in and ask them what the biggest CCA battery they have is. They soon produce something I am happy with.

Are you sure your not trying to drive your caravan? With a suitable caravan mover they are probably quicker than a Defender:D

When it comes to batteries for Defenders, cranking amps are your freind.

As Disco says. The more CCA (cold cranking amps) the better. Physical size is not always a good guide but obviously you need something that will fit in the battery box. On a Defender you'll be hard pressed to find one thats too big to fit though.

Like folk have said the highest cca you get is the better.

I found these out today when I went to get a new battery for my 110 200 tdi engine.

I explained to them that I will be using a winch, extar lights.

They suggested 130 amp 1000cca I paid £95 all in.

I know that this is what is required for the newer LRs

Whats all this CCA crap or whatever for a battery measurement ?????.Whats the matter with Amp Hours !!!!!!! Or MPH instead of KPH that news and sport readers like to use,This is the UK its MPH ?? Feet/inches instead of cm !! OK i will give you that one.Same as a torque wrench why have the media changed to Nm instead of one that we have been using for years i dunno:confused:

Thanks for all the advice, will have a look. Got mine on charge, but its not fully charged yet, going to give it another go once its charged.

Thou i need a good excuse to get back on my bike in this cold weather and ride to work again.

CCA stands for Cold Crank Amps, it nothing new, been about for years as a measure of how many amps the battery can prodive as start current. It's TOTALLY different from a Ah. You can get a 150Ah battery that won't start an engine.

When buying a starting battery it is imporant to to get a good mix, there are also some small Ah ratings with brilliant CCA but wouldn't last very long if you left some sidelights on etc.

The new battery (fitted by the previous owner) in my recently purchased 1997 110 is rated at 550CCA & 68Ah. When the temps get below -5°c it really struggles to turn the cold engine over.
