Think I need a new alternator, but are any particular brands better than others? My options seem to be..

Brand new genuine £624
Reconditioned genuine £273
Brand new Denso (OME?) £116
Brand new pattern copy £73

My Defender started making a horrible grinding noise whilst driving home from work today:mad:, I pulled over and crawled underneath and gave everything a coat of looking at. Nothing obviously wrong so slowly carried on driving the short diststance home.

Half a mile further and the engine cut out, requiring this......

At the mechanics we saw metal shavings around the engine bay next to the alternator, and when the fan belt was removed the grinding noise stopped. I assume the alternator has packed in?

Thanks MHM, Unfortunately Im going to need one pretty quick as I need my Defender for getting to work each day. I guess a recon genuine is my best option?

what's wrong with getting a new aftermarket one? you'd have to go through 4 of them before it would cost more than a genuine recon one.

Buy 2 aftermarket ones and keep a spare in the motor just in case and it's still only half the price.

Thats not a bad idea actually. Do Britpart make alternators though, as Id rather avoid them!
