Needle scaler psi

I think I’m clearly missing a trick. I went to use a new out the box, Clarke needle scaler. Although it has been sat in a box for years. I couldn’t get it to go?! When I take the needle attachment off, it’s clearly pushing out air. I put 90 psi through is and it doesn’t budge.. apparently it will operate with just 8cfm. My hvlp gun works fine as does my rattle gun.
I stripped the needle attachment as wondered if it had rusted up but it’s all mint inside. Any pointers?!

Hope u didn’t mind me asking but have us out a few drops of oil in the air inlet plse

plus have u got a regulator / pressure gauge plse fitted at the gun to ensure that the Psi doesn’t drop as u press the trigger

another thing is have u tried placing it onto a concrete surface , push onto the needles to see if the needles go in and out correctly

hope that may help in a small way

Thanks for reply. I didn’t fit my pressure gauge tool end. Did t think to. Just my reg and filter tank end.

Yes oiled before I started.

No I haven’t checked it on concrete - I was wondering this - do they not work until pressed down? Pressed on shed wall but my kanger doesn’t move until It hits surface

ur so welcome , was just thinking if maybe the psi drops to low , ie, hose too small etc, at least with a pressure gauge at the gun ur see if its ok,

did use one ages ago and just found resting it onto concrete helped free up the pins , also try at an angle to see if that helps

wonder if there’s an adjustment on the side of the needle gun, maybe there’s dirt in the air inlet , gauge will tell u if the supply is constant by watching the gauge

hopefully someone else will be along to also help

Cheers I’ll definitely fit the gun gauge tomorrow so I can see exactly what it’s putting out

They will run in fresh air, ie no need to press them to get them to work.

Bloke at club had three that he could not get to work, simple strip and lube got all three working just fine.

Great tools, though you may struggle with 90psi, especially if you do not have the volume of air available, but I would still expect the thing to try and start moving.

Thanks Lynall. Yes that’s it- I expected it to atleast rattle. I can up the pressure. I stripped the needle attachment itself last night. I believe all the gun does is push air out (which it was doing).

Inside there is a piston, air pushes this out and the anvil on the end of the piston hits the needles, a spring returns it for the next stroke, I have had the piston push rod snap in two, but that was a hard used decade old descaler.
I would be checking that spring, Iirc the spring surrounds the needles?

Checked both mate and think it’s a lack of power.

Air chisel - the chisel shoots at the retaining/bounce back spring but not with enough ooomph to shoot it back again and cause a cycle if you get me.

Needle gun threatened to start a few times. Half second pulse then done.

I think I’ll buy a new compressor to be honest. It’s only 60l so it does kick in a fair bit and you’d never manage to paint more than a wing. Compressor is 12.5cfm rating. Apparently tool operates at 8 but it’s clear it’s not getting enough.
The old Clarke one has seen its best days I think so I may give to my bro for his tyres or my farmer mate for cleaning.

Looking at a 100l SGS 14cfm jobby. Any thoughts?

I have a v twin compressor, I only bought it as I wanted a fast build up time, max pressure is 110psi, and tbh that simply is not enough for most air tools, air cut off tool is weak to say the least, just checked spec and it says 14.5cfm, and that will be weak chinese cfm!

EDIT just checked sgs spec and it is the same compressor unit as mine, but on a 100 litre tank compared to my 50 litre.

Might be to far, but looks decent size and 10 bar as well?

Cheers. Think I’m going to go for another Clarke as there’s 36 quid off it at the moment! And if it messes up I can just drive to machine mart and get it sorted

Are you using a decent big bore air hose, or a cheap curly one from a kit ?

If you need to test/encourage it to work, put your finger in harm's way, it'll work just fine without any prior warning

Mine has a "power adjustment" screw on the bottom... I often need to wind it down for the unit to work - if it has too much air, it doesn't oscilate and just squirts air out...

But Mine is ancient, and hardly used.

Yes was using big propper hose. It definitely doesn’t budge. I’ve shifted the compressor to a farmer friend to blow out his cabs and stuff anyway and got a 150l one on its way as needed a bigger tank. Went belt driven too for a bit less noise!

Thread bump! Rigged my compressor up with all new filters etc today. That needle gun still doesn’t bloody work! I’ll order a new one I think!

I've used a borrowed one but I can't recall now if I reduced the psi from 90 or not, I may have.

I've an air chisel that has fits of pique but I think I'm just going to blindly throw that off an overpass.

Do you have high enough flow rate?

I still reckon you need 10 bar and lots of it.
