I was going to remove it to give it a clean, is it worth doing. I fitted an EGR blanking kit

Yes. The manifold clogs up with goop.
I was also hoping to be able to clean the MAF sensor, though I have no idea what it looks like, where to find it or how best to clean it. any tips?
Imo cleaning the MAF is worthless. They age with use, not by getting dirty.

Brill i'll have the manifold off over the weekend if I can find the bolt locations and I'll forget about the MAF.
An update on what I done so far to try and resolve the black smoke issue and lack of power.
I have replaced the long vac hose from the vac tank to the solenoid, fitted the new air filter, was going to fit new oil separator but it had already bean done at some point, I fitted an EGR blanking kit, checked the other two hoses on the solenoid they seem fine but attached a turbo vac filter to the end of one hose.
Still get black smoke, not as much but still exists. seems to be a little more powerful.
Will buy some Mr Muscle as I was reading it works well in cleaning the Manifold and flush it out with the jet wash if this is correct.
Not sure what to do after that.

Hi Mustang.
When I got the Freelander I took it to a mechanic that I know, it went on a Fault code reader but no faults showed up?

Have you tried disconnecting the MAF so it runs its default program. That will rule it out if there is no chnage

The Mechanics words were, I think your turbo has gone, rev the engine, oh I can hear the turbo now, lets do a service. From that point I lost confidence in that mechanic and found my way here.

lol welcome to our world ;) well I got this from the internet
"Black Smoke: Cause, Impact, and Prevention. ... Over-fueling is the primary cause of black smoke from the exhaust of a heavy duty diesel engine. Over-fueling can be caused by diesel fuel injector wear that enlarges the nozzle hole or erodes the injector needle and allows excess fuel to flow into the combustion chamber"

No I haven't tried that, I don't know what the MAF look like or where it is.
From the internet "A mass (air) flow sensor (MAF) is used to find out the mass flow rate of air entering a fuel-injected internal combustion engine. The air mass information is necessary for the engine control unit (ECU) to balance and deliver the correct fuel mass to the engine."
If its over fueling it could be injectors or its not getting the right amount of air mixed with the fuel. If you disconnect the MAF it will run a default pre programmed fuel air mix. might give you a clue as to what is going on. Its at the back of the engine just passed the air filter on the left if you are looking at the front of the engine.

Do you happen to have a picture of what one looks like so i know what to look for?
If i manage to find it and disconnect it what should i expect to happen?
Do i drive it to test or just rev the engine to above 2000 rpm?

I been watching his videos, hadn't got to the fuel injectors, will have a watch.
Do the MAF first. you could give it a clean or run a tank or two of good quality fuel and a a dose of Comma magic through which might slove your problem, If that fails and you do the leak off test and you find an injector issue. You are proberly best getting somebody to do it as it looks very messey and it WILL be expensive. Good luck.

If you changed the air filter. Then you would have seen the MAF sensor wiring. It's on the left of the filter housing. Under the filter top cover. ;)

Hi Nodge yes I think I found it, been out again this morning to look for it. has a plug/connector attached to the top of it with two hex or torx screws holding it in place.
Have not removed it as yet or unplugged it as i was having difficulty undoing the clip that holds the wire to the top and I have to research I I clean it.
Many thanks for your reply, always very helpful.

You can unplug the MAF and drive it to see what difference it makes. It will put the MIL on but ignore that for the test. ;)

Just bumped into a mechanic in the local Cafe and was having a chat with him and explained what I have done so far. yet another cracking reply form a mechanic (Maybe it it needs a long run to clear it out) followed by (you might need to clean the catalytic converter by taking it off an washing it out)
So far I have had suggestions that it might be the Fuel injectors, Turbo, Maf, Hoses, Solenoid, Fuel Pump, Crank case filter, EGR , LoL, that's half of the engine.

OK Nodge ill give that a go. will the mil light go off when I recconect the cable to the MAF or will i need to have it reset?

Yes it will go out. It will log a couple of codes, but you'll know the origin, so it won't matter.
