Hello, I recently bought a 98 Range 4.0 Se - manual, the cruise control doesnt work on it. The motorway button lights up but when i press the set button, it doesnt work. Now I have checked all the vacum hoses/pipes, are all in tip top condition, the diaphram holds pressure, the brake switch is perfectly fine, the brake lights are all fine, no bulbs blown. Now I dont know what else would be remaining, could it be the CC ecu or the bottons on the steering. Is there a way I can check it out, any help would be appreciated.

One last thing, I have noticed, when I drive the car, the lights on the interior panel and the brake lights, keep blugging (blinking sort)- its sort of like as if there is less current or supply, would it be an alternator or battery issue and is it because of it the CC is not working due to not getting enough current.

Cheers

Check your pipes, tee piece bellows again including the very long hose.
All are prone to cracking normally where you can't see it, check also the bowden cable is not siezed.
Mine looked perfect when viewed from above but had split where you could not see it.
Hoses are cheap 6mm internal diam.
Cruise Control Problems and Solutions
There is a description in the workshop manual describing all the sensors.
If you don't have one, you can gret the parts list workshop manual and Rave from this link.

Hello redrenger89, thanks a lot for your help. well while i was checking all the hoses from the engine end to the back of the steering, all of them are new. Now I still went on to check the suction, I pulled the pipe from the brake switch and tried to suck on to it and the diaphram does hold air, seems that all the hoses are in perfect condition along with the diaphram. Well now my old guess is with the CC ecu and to check power with the switches and the buttons on the steering ribbon. Is there a way to check them out.
Thanks

When you press the CC switch do you hear a click as the relay pulls in? I have a fault with mine at the moment. The switch lights up, but I do not hear the little click like I used to. I have not had a chance to check any relays/fuses, but my hoses look fine too.

Well when i press the motorway button on the panel, theres no noise or clicks, but when i press the set button, I hear noise of tick-tick, same with the res button. Today i spent 4 hours on the car, checked all the hoses, the brake switch and the clutch switch, wiring, all seems fine. Finally, I went to the engine bay and pulled out the hose from the CC pump and sucked on the hose from the bellow, it holds pressure but the CC pump hose, I think theres lose of pressure from there and the problem is, that hose cant be changed, it goes into the vacum pump and is fixed to some coil thingy. In my case now my guesses are the ribbon buttons or the ECU or the vacum pump. Any three of them, seems to be a growing hassle for me really. Why cant land rover make a simple thing. damn...

I get the "on off" click, but nothing with I touch the wheel controls.

I think the wheel controls are kaput in mine. Not checked hoses yet, but the wheel controls for the stereo don't work either.

I know before I say this, that it probably is a load of pish, but I'll say it anyway. My merc when it has an abs fault also loses cruise, yes it's not a RR and yes it probably is a load of **** so I'm off.

Sorry, that is the button I meant. Maybe if you hear a tick tick, then it's definitely electical. You should only hear a single click when you press it and it engages.

I wonder if it could it be something stupid like the CC is thinking the brake is pressed.

Try pulling out the switch on from your break pedal or clutch if you have a manual car. Its worth cleaning the contacts with wd40 or mechanical spray to shrug off any rust or stuck up contacts. Well I would say, check all the hoses - 1st thing, then the switches - next, then try to look at the CC vacum pump and if alls well then I guess the CC ECU and buttons. Someone told me the BeCM is responsible for the CC too, but I checked it in the workshop manual and it is no way connected to the CC. If you were in london, I would be most welcome to help you out. But anyways best of luck mate. I would miss my CC until it works.

Sorry for the delay in replying,
Been laid up again....
I found this on the web... It may help

Most of the time the cruise control problem comes from two switches that are next to you break pedal , one of them disengages the cruise control when you push the brakes this little switch when you touch it easily gets out of range and when it is out of range it does not send the message to the ECU cruise control so it does not work .(you can check this with a tester by pushing the brake pedal and see if there is continuity. if not take this little switch and pull out the little piston out completely and reinstall ( magic it works )..

Any good?

Hello Redrenger, yes the thing is absolutely right. I have checked 2 switches, mine has a switch on the clutch and 1 on the brake. both seem to be fine, for me I think I have either a problem with the ECU or the vacum pump, not sure. Where exactly in reading are you, I usually go to london road and lower early, if your somewhere close can drop down some day and help you check your car.

hmmm, i have read this thread with interest after being referred to it by Dopey.

Do you have the radio controls on your wheel?? Do they work ok??

I dont have a petrol so can only really guess BUT if you are sure all the hoses are ok then I reckon its electrical. The petrol vehicles have a little cruise control ECU that you can interrogate with the diagnostic pooter. Might be worth a session on there to see if the ECU even responds??

thanks Wills & Dopey, i went to see him in the noon today but as he has a deisel version so we couldnt work it out, it was worth a trip, nice to chat with a fellow ranger. Well i did look into the manual for the steps to check the CC ECU but the truth is not much understood the instructions, will print out the pages in the morning and try it out with a multimeter, damn these electrical things do my head inn, but then again its the love for the car, will do it.. Will keep you guys informed, thanks guys for your help, appreciate you all, its nice to help each other :)
