hi guys since i brought this damm disco 300td1 1995 had trouble after trouble.gearbox went and ive just replaced that and clutch. and now a new problem. 2weeks ago i tweeked the pump slightly the proper way. the diffrence was superb. no black smoke and running brilll. then today i went to fetch a car back on my trailer 260 mile all round trip.i noticed when on way back it seemed to start to dye down on hills and had to change down still pulling good. then when i got back started to notice that when i was pulling off with trailer on it was very sluggish to pull off and large bouts of black smoke issueing then it would pich up and clear ok when driving along but only doing it every time you stop to pull off or come down the gear to 15mph and then hit gas and it will smoke again black smoke. now only other thing i did yesterday was leave the cat in situ and done away with the silencer boxes and made a straight through exhaust. other thing i drained the water out of that filter housing at rear of chssie. thats it so what could this be.

try changing the air and fuel filters and if that doesnt make any difference then back off the smoke screw on the top of the pump by 1/2 turn.It sounds like you are getting too much fuel before you are getting any boost from the turbo.

hi done away with all the air box got a snorkal fitted with inline gauze to filter particals.full engine service done all clean filters. so back off the torq screw on top of the pump cap.

hi if i was to alter the small bar on the actator which goes to the exhaust flap fitted in manifold by 6mm this should bring the turbo in earlier .i think thats rite

you dont want to touch the turbo as they are fine as they are. i would just try the smoke screw first and see if things improve before condemning the injectors. if you do suspect the injectors just chuck a bit of injector cleaner in to see if that helps.

will try backing off screw tomoz.as thats how it feels like its flooding then once you here turbo come in it blows the black smoke out then clears fine when you going along.i let you know how it is .

hi will check hose thanks

Hi Smudge, it sounds very much like one of your turbo hoses is de-laminating on the inside, blocking the flow of incoming air - this reduces power and causes black smoke.

The common places for this to happen are: a. in the elbow on the turbo & b. on the pipe between the intercooler and the inlet manifold.

Easy to check, cheap to fix.

Hi there smudge, black smoke usually indicates over-fuelling ie not enough air for the amount of fuel. This can be cause by many things including:

1. Blocked air filter - replace with new;

2. Delaminating rubber hoses. Sometimes the rubber hoses between the turbo/intercooler/inlet manifold start to disintegrate on the inside creating a flap. When you press the accelerator this flap closes, causing a loss of air. This reduces power and brings loads of black smoke.

Good luck

hi guys just a up date .well today i checked the hoses and all were good. next i did away with the rear fuel filter housing that collects water or muck. still at this point no luck .still billowing loads of black smoke along with injector knock.so once i heard this i took out the injectors and got them tested all were fine.by now only 2 things left.next i backed off the screw on top of the pump under that cap by half of turn. guess wot.still the same. so finally egr valve.made to blanking plates fitted them and guess what.yesss yesss yess bingo bloody damm egr valve runs a treat now loads of power and runs sweet. cant belive this damm thing can cause so much ****. any way guys thanks for all the advice,
