Can anyone give me a rough idea of insurance and road tax costs for a Land Rover Defender 2.5 1986 (Mileage:65,000) diesel LWB canvas roof ( just come from MOD) can't find where to source the info. The gov website doesn't seem to have this type of vehicle as a category or maybe I'm just not finding it, appreciate any help cheers

Just clicked on a few options but coming up with an issue as menu drop for year / reg for selected land rover defender 110 only goes back to 1990 G and the one I'm looking at buying is 1986.
Thinking of costs :
Just wondering if insurance is really high and also if it needs a specialist MOT ?

Can't see any reason why there would be a specialist MOT - but if you're concerned just ring the garage you use and ask them.
As for insurance, quotes can vary by hundreds of pounds. Firstly, I imagine it will be on a commercial registration, which could have an effect either way. Comparison sites get iffy if you have anything non-standard, but ring your current insurer, and try the NFU, who MIGHT be useful.

Hi, Land Rover Defenders didn't start until 1990, so you need to look for a CSW, County Station Wagon, 1983-1990ish

As above - look for land rover 90 or 110. Insurance for me - not using any no claims as there on the other motor - is just over £200 (im 35, no accidents claims etc)

Don't look up as a CSW as that is a completely different model & spec.
Contact any of the specialist insurers (the magazines are full of them) and speak to someone who knows what they are talking about.
An ex-MOD 2.5NA D 110 soft-top is about the cheapest to insure but you have to be certain the cover is correct hence why you need to speak to a specialist.

Try footman James also. My 1985 90 is on a classic policy with agreed value, no limit on miles etc. no hassle from then when I just swapped to a disc braked axle either, just made a not of the modification and job done!
