I passed my driving test in June 1968, and in August, the family went on holiday to Arisaig for the 6th consecutive year to meet the usual suspects. BBC Scotland's Douglas Fraser was there, aged 8. Dad's pal, Bob, had towed a GP14 dinghy 420M from Wolverhampton, behind an 88" ex-Army GS. Then, there was still grass growing up the middle of the A830. "Here are the keys" he said, "Let me know when it needs more petrol." Petrol cost 5/- per gallon (25p). I was smitten. We went places no vehicle with tyres had been before and learned how to get it out. I bought a Series 1 86" for £50 with my first University Grant cheque the next year. Since then I've had two Series 2, two Series 3 and I bought my Discovery 2 new in 2001. Drove a friend's Range Rover in 1973, when they were rare.
