hi all,

i have a nasty noise coming from my right rear wheel when i turn right. i sounds like a brake disc is rubbing but it is not, plus i think that would do it all the time not just on right turns. i replaced the wheel barring as there was a lot of play in it but the noise is still there. has anyone got any ideas what to check?

cheers

What kind of noise have ye got Pete, and are ye sure it's coming from where ye say?

If it's a horrible kind of "shimmering", high pitch metal scraping sound, check that the dust cover isn't rubbing against the brake disc.

i got a squeeling sound from the back on a right turn but it passed the MOT last year no probs,
think it's a loose break pad,
wait till mot time if it aint that bad,

When you had it stripped did you notice if the disc was heavilly scaled, you might have to take a hammer to the inner and outer most surfaces and remove it, pay attention to the back of the disc as well. If you can get a large screwdriver in and spin the disc you might be able to get it off, and off course as pos said it could be the backplate rubbing. Lift it back up and check the play in the hub and lever the backplate away a tad when you are at it.

it sound like the brake is metal to metal but the pads and discs are new ish. there was no scaring on the disc when i had it stripped down to do the bearing. and it is the fact the it only makes the noise when turning right.

If there is no play in the wheel bearing, and it feels ok when you spin the wheel, and there is no bearing noise on the road, I would have to agree with pos, it sounds like the backplate rubbing during cornering.

In relation to it doing it going around corners, I wish I had a quid for every time that this has happened to me, ok in the workshop but out on the road the bastid rubs on corners, and sometimes it takes a few attempts to get rid of it. Unfortunatly bearings have a little bit of play and this allows the disc to move during cornering, because the backplate is connected to the axle it dunt move.

If it were the n/s rear disc and you went around a corner to the right I would tend to think it was the bottom of the backplate, since the top of the disc would tend to go away from the plate and the bottom into the plate, and the opposite for the other. So on yer go get the big screwgie into it and give it a lever, and give it a spin before you let it down coz by levering one part you can twist another bit into the disc in another place.

Just watch the abs sensor.
