Hi,

While I have my centre console off my 1993 Disco......

The geabox is from a 300TDi, or so I'm told. The gearlever side movement is between two springy rods, possibly a horse-shoe spring. These rods restrict the side movement, but allow further movement if forced, ie to select reverse or 5th.

The problem seems to be that in order to select 3rd or 4th, one has to push against the 5th gear restrictor, and having pushed, I then have no "feel" to guide me how far to push the lever. So I come out of 2nd, aim at 3rd, but 50/50 chance I will get 5th. Or if I don't push hard enough against the detent spring, I get a graunch of 1st.

The two springy prongs are seperated by a piece of flat bar, which appears to be too narrow. I THINK an extra couple of mm would push the spring over enough to give easy access to 3rd and 4th.

I'm thinking in terms of a piece of shim to make that bar wider? Or am I missing something?

Oh yes, the little lever seems to bear no relation to the picture on the knob, It goes back and fore, but there seems to be no provision for pushing it sideways. Can anyone tell me how it works? I understand the Series 1 thru 3 system, had a vague idea about the 200TDi system. I assume this is a 300TDi system, what I've never met before.

I simply hate modern cars.

Sounds to me like the bias plate on the gear selector needs adjusting.

Remove the centre console and you will see the plate around the gear lever. There are 4 bolts that need to be slackened and then the plate will move side to side. You have to adjust this until you get a good shift into 3rd and 4th.

To test for a 'good shift' let the lever spring to it normal position and check that you can select 3rd or 4th by pushing forward or pulling back without having to move the lever sideways at all.

Hi Andy,

Bias plate? There is a sort of cover/cup over the bottom of the gearlever, apparently held onto top of gear box by two screws (cross point. probably 6mm). This cover carries the reverse lamp switch, and something with a black plunger tucked under the tunnel......possibly the reverse detent?

The two springy things hold the lever biased towards 1st/2nd. The Haynes manual isn't very helful, is it. As I said, this may be a later gearbox.

This is the confusing bit. It looks as if there has been a gearbox swap. Where is the reverse on the box.....left and forwards to right and back?

Google images found me this...

The finger is pointing to the bias plate.

H Andy,

Ahaaa! I am moistening my tongue, so prepare your boots for cleaning.

That looks like my thingy, only most of the mechanism is hidden by the cup I mentioned. The two cross-point screws fit into the two tapped holes in your photo. The springs are nothing like what I imagined.

My reverse is left and foreward.

I guess it will be tommow before I get out there again.

Much ta!

Thanks Andy,

So how does the little lever move then? There seems to be no provision for moving it sideways, although the knob shows picures to indicate it does.

I'll try for a photo, post tomorrow.

Hi Andy,

I have taken a shufti at the transfer gear lever. No way can I see a pivot for movong the lever sideways to lock the centre diff. Nor vdoes it seem obvious for the lever at the back of gearbox/top of transfer box to rotate about a N-S centreline. Photo of transfer lever below.

Maybe a PO has removed part of the transfer lever, but even so, I can't see how twisting the push/pull rod between the lever and the transfer box will do anything.

Am I having a Senior Moment, or has my wife lent me a Blonde Moment?

HTH.

Hi,

I removed the cover (2 screws) slackened the four bolts, shoved the gear lever into 3rd, tightened the bolts. Its now a joy to change gear. Manythanks.

I pondered some more about the transfer gear lever, but still of the same opinion. I don't know if its relevent, but the rubber "diaphragm" cover cum gear stick gaiter thingy does not line up on the two gear levers. The gaiter bits are closer together than the two levers. PO?
