Evening, Today i removed the n/s downpipe on my disco 2 v8, Snapped all three studs so removed manifold (with ease luckily) and fitted new studs, Now i stopped working at that point and locked the car up, The n/s indicators started to flash and will not stop, Tried the indicator stalk, Nothing, Hazard switch, Nothing, Lock, unlock arm/disarm alarm, nothing, Still flashing, Relay is clicking and there is some kind of buzz every 30 seconds or so, Swapped the 2 indicator relays, Same thing happens (n/s) so not the relay, disconnected battery, reconect... Was ok, Tried indicator stalk, Starts doing it again, nothing will make it stop.. Im stumped, Just to mention, the front indicator bulb was flashing with the side and rear ones but now the front has stopped and only the wing flasher and rear are flashing but the bulb filament is sound... Cant get my head round it.. Any ideas fellas? Thanks alot. DD.

Hi, I've checked the diagram, maybe i can give u some ideas just tell me two things:

1.(coz i'm not english i always have probs with that)... confirm that n/s is right side
2.Maybe u didnt observe, just check...... while this thing is happening isnt the tail lamp illuminated too?

Anyway is something related with the IDM(short circuit or false feed).......just pray as not to be the BCU.

and which MY is your Disco, there are some small differences between pre/after 2003

Did you turn the ignition on and off again??

Only asking because the shock sensor is in the passenger footwell which is near the downpipe. I wasted several hours trying to figure why the lights were flashing and it turned out to be that.

If it's not what davek said:

Simple check: while its doing the trick unplug the indicator/lighting switch(not so hard, u just have to remove to the rotary coupler)...if it stops then there is the problem.

Unfortunatelly the indicators on D2 have a more complicated operation mode than it could seem on first sight. It is the BCU and IDM both involved so if it isnt a simple short circuit or false feed issue then if u are not trained or at least very familliar with electonics will be hard to diagnose. To see how compicated it is check the w-shop manual > Body contoll Unit > Inputs/outputs ...u'll find IDM too(this one is integrated directly into the passenger compartment fusebox's circuit and to check his outputs with a multimeter u have to dissasemble the fusebox........what's certain is that the commands for the indicator relay's coil are comming from the IDM's pin 21 and that one gets input via a serial bus(C0661-1) from the BCU activated through C0660-6 with a RH indicator input. So the problems could be:
1. BCU gets undesirable input
2. Not point 1. but BCU sends an output to IDM
3. Not point 2. but IDM gets an undesirable input
4. Not point 3. but IDM sends output to relay coil

Point 1. and 3 could be simple electrical issues but if not then things are getting complicated......the "funny" part on this is that it might not be(u never know) recognised even by the tester.

If things will go as far as nothing will help then try to find a friend with same model of Disco(the MY is important not the engine type) who will be in tune to give u his IDM for a swap......then u'll know that is the IDM or the BCU...........swapping IDM doesnt harm just u have to wait 5 minutes with ignition on untill it connects with the BCU.

Anyway it doesnt hurt to plug it into a scanner first. Good luck

I have an obd2 reader, I will plug that in now, I have refitted the manifold and downpipe just now and tried to start the car, Its just turning over and not starting now, I think it has immobilized itself somehow..??

Is that in the engine compartment or by the passengers foot area, I checked the connections in the footwell and checkad all fuses, The big push button in the engine compartment (passenger footwell) was out, so i pushed it in and it fired up, Running good and lock unlock wors properly so do the indicators... Is that what you was on about that button? Thanks for the advice, Just drivers downpipe now.. By the way, Does anybody else have subaru downpipes on their v8 disco 2, This one has!!
Thanks again.

Reset the fuel cutout switch per the manual. It thinks you've been in an accident; hence the flashing hazards and no start.

Aye it was.. Thanks mate. Its got no headlights or bumper it had been in a bump, Any idea why it triggered again, Been starting fine up until last night..

What i wrote was for the situation when just one side's indicators are doing it not the hazard(both sides)......anyway the connectors i invoked were for the right side(as i made the error to think that is n/s)

Wow, the forum n00b got one right! I remember this one as I was just dredging thru the owners manual looking for what type of fluid's weeping from me disco's transfer case...
