Mysterious problem and a strange soloution.

No pics on here to show you,

If you remove the trans tunnel and drivers floor you will see the side of the gearbox and linkage. The pivot bolt screws into the side of the main gearbox and had a hole in which the leaver pivots around a metal pin with plastic inserts. The top is pushed from left to right when you operate the difflock leaver and the arm pivots on the gearbox pivot bolt pin. At the bottom of the arm it attaches to an inverted U link that connects to the difflock operation mechanism which is part of the transfer box above and behind the front output flange.

The difflock leaver is limited and cannot be adjusted if the pivot pin is screwed in too far you will not get the throw required to get the required movement required at the end of the arm. Likewise if the plastic inserts are not fitted the difflock leaver will feel 'sloppy' and it will never give enough movement to correctly actuate the difflock even if the pivot pin is in the right position.

This is from memory, I cannot find a pic at the mo need to go get to Herts pub meet so need to dash off. If you still do not understand I will have to take pic and point it out.

iam really a newcomer at this so i'll have to trouble you with the pic

That is NOT a safe assumption.

What you describe is a classic sign of DIFF LOCK ENGAGED on a hard grippy surface.

CharlesY...thanx for your comment....i have a feeling ure right.....i just checked the transfer levers beneath the gears and things seemed fine at that end at least but whats going on inside the transmission box...god knows!!!

In relation to what you just wrote....when i jacked up the four wheels today....the rear wheels seemed to turn in opposite directions but the front wheels only turned on their own.....which means when i turn the LEFT FRONT WHEEL clockwise...the RIGHT FRONT WHEEL did NOT turn anti-clockwise...any guidance on whether this may be an indication of differential LOCKED??

You did NOT do as I suggested. You jacked up ALL the wheels. There were good reasons for me suggesting you jack up ONE SIDE, and that reason was the leave BOTH the wheels on the other side on the ground, and thus prevented from turning.

Your way (all wheels up) leaves the axle diffs free to do their work. We weren't interested in them - we were worrying only about the CENTRE diff.

Have you got it sorted now?

CharlesY

i am glad to report that the problem has been resolved. I told the mchanic to take apart the transfer box so that this mystery could be resolved once and for all. it turns out that the transfer box was full of dirt...dont know how it got there but it did...and i assume that when i shifted the high low gear and moved it around a bit......the dirt got shifted to the sides and allowed relatively free movement of the gears...but after a while the dirty possibly started obstructing the gears once more....now that the dirt has been removed...its all fine and the defender is running smooth and silk.....i thank all for their interest in this problem and hope my experience will help others too in diagnosing their problems....

one problem that persists is that after running the car for a while...a loud echoing hollow humming sound comes from somewhere....it stops if i press the clutch and also is NOT there when the car is allowed to drift in nuetral...its only there if i press the accelerator pedal...even if the car is stationary...any ideas what that may be????
