My TD5 Disco hard to start and running rough

you can't "check" sensors by looking at them or cleaning them m8...you better make somehow and plug in a proper tester to check fault codes and live data cos there could be many reasons

if that garage used a generic tool and got some air flow fault code it could be the AAP sensor aswell(the small one from the top of the airbox), or god knows what cos generic readers do not comunicate well with the td5 ecu

a proper diagnose is the shortest way believe me

hey wat du think i did checked it with?????? lol "check" sensors by looking at them
i aint merchanically minded but ive had landys for a few years , only recently got a td5 still learning but come on.

The guarage i went is a land rover services and only deals with landy
they also plugged it in properly
the air flow reading was standing at 4.3 on tickover with the old maf
and was moving around 54 with the new maf on tickover
rpm abot 775

oh also the only faults that came up were airflow readings and air con. i have no air con hence no readings.

after i had new maf all faults were gone even after a drive around the block with the merchanic and computer plugged in.??

still wandering what it might be?

I didnt want to offend you, sorry...in this thread is enough info about a "specialised garage" and "trained mechanic" competence so that's why i was suspicious... i'm just trying to help

if they know theyr job you must be able to tell us what was the maf reading at 3000 rpm aswell to rule out the MAF,

-also important in that hard starting/rough running issue is the fuel pressure after the FPR(fuel pressure regulator, fitted where the the 5'th glowplug must have been) ...a LR garage must have a gauge and know how to measure that

- also what's the manifold absolute pressure?

- does the AAP(ambient air pressure and temp.) sensor show the correct ambient pressure and temperature(compaired to a thermo/baro - meter?)

- do you still have EGR fitted? ...if yes it might be clogged with muck

- What about the glow plugs? ... they have a post heat operation too you know, they're not there just to pre-heat the chamber.

- about the temp sensors... there are two of them, same type and both could affect cold starting:
1. coolant temp sensor(ECT) ..the one from the coolant elbow which you mentioned ...though this one would affect the gauge too
2. fuel temp(FT) sensor(screwed in the FPR) it measures the fuel temperature, if the tester shows constantly 60*C, or you see that the reedings are erratic it means it's fubar'd ... in case of a coolant temp sensor failure the management uses the FT pressure readings

- how are the injector balance/cylinder roughness readings?

how are all these figures on live data? a proper diagnose must have revealed all these readings

....IMO these things are basic knowledge for a LR specialist and for difficult cold start issues they must have checked all

hope this helps

Hi spoke too soon about my landy was on M18 last night with it doing between 60-70 when suddenly started rumbling this thought i was on rumble strips but wasnt then thought it was tyre noise it was making so slows to pull into inside lane and starts to hear noise which seemed to be coming from passenger back wheel so pulls on hard shoulder to have a look as i gets out smoke coming from what look to be drivers wheel arch so moves away while cleared abit but really smelled of burnt rubber so had a look at all tyres all seemed ok so another call to aa who basically didnt have a clue so just towed me home when got back home started it and all seemed ok so was going to take for little run just to see and dint get 3 door down when started grinding and rumbling again which is coming from underneath ant ideas anybody im thinking myself propshaft or transfere box but really havnt a clue now and really dont want to take it back to stratstone anybody know of anywhere in the yorkshire area who may be able to help

maybe mines sorted now took it for a run earlier and it seemed ok
cleaned map sensor also found a loose clip on the intercooler pipe.
maybe that was all.?
untill next time

No haven't had chance yet to have a look going to get it up tomoz on ramps see if can see anything ive been told if it is prop shaft to take it of and run it as a 2 wheel drive for now could this do any damage

no harm on short run but you have to lock the central diff for that, otherwise it wont move

Well had my landy on ramps today couldnt see nothing wrong took it off ramps and as reversing up drive my landy locked up wont go forward or reverse when you try to drive its bogging down like its trying to go and same in reverse the wheels moving a bit and rolling back when i let off any ideas anybody thinking possibly hand brake

Sounds almost like transmission wind up- have a look at handbrake drum as I bought a disco with dodgy brake lining and it would lock up when hot.

What are the oil levels and colours like?

Going to have a look at brake drum on Friday (my only day off) been told to look and brake actuator as well l is there any way of knowing if its transmission wind up and how would i sort that out. Will check oils as well. Just had new gear box and clutch fitted before it went to stratstones could it be something to do with that.

It sounds like a wind up type situation, you can try selecting neutral on transfer box which would in effect disconnect front from rear.
