Hi all, been a silent member for ages managing to solve all problems till now from searches, but I'm hoping for some help please.
1999 disco 2 td5.

Car been fine for a while, diving home last night on dual carriageway, oil light came on, no flickering just on solid. Engine stuttering funny whiz pop noise (!?) and big loss of power, it was a very nasty place to stop with loads of traffic around so I pushed on to a lay by about 1/3 mile down the road.

It was clear engine was very hot, had about 1/2 litre oil in car so put it in, left it 20 mins to cool down, oil level was a little low but not below lower line.

Tried engine and it fired up fine, made it to garage about a mile down the road but very under powered, plugged in my Hawkeyes that was in car, no error codes at all. Bought a bit more oil, topped it up again and limped home the last mile.

Not sure where to go from here, does this sound like turbo oil oil pump or more sinister?

Any help gladly taken, thanks in advance.

Bit more info, it's on 165000 miles, just been out to try it, started fine, but sounds a bit lumpy and oil light comes on and stays on from startup.

Water level is fine, been watching it like a hawk lately as rad has a small leak.

During the whole episode last night, temp gauge never went higher than half way, despite engine being well hot.

Thanks again...

I wouldn't start it with the oil light on, it Sounds like the oil pump to me.

Drop the sump and check the bolt is still in the pump as it is the easiest thing to do straight away. Look for metal particles in the oil when you drop the oil.

Bad news, sorry to hear that,

I would have thought the bolt would have come loose before it had covered 165 K miles. Makes me think it might be worth checking mine!
Does anyone know if this affected a certain range of engine number / VIN / build years?

Cheers

Christ thats sh1te.Surprised it came off at that mileage though.I need to check mine.im on 156k and presumed it will have been done.Maybe a bit naive of me.

Yeah I'm in the market for another td5 now, no prizes for guessing what the first job is going to be. I had her 8 years, I'd always intended checking the bolt, then over the last couple of years I also thought, well if it was going to drop out it would have by now.

Seriously unlucky there Old Chap, I would have thought the same as you. After that much time and miles, what caused it to decide to undo and fall off????
As yours was a 99, does anyone know of or heard of this happening on later vehicles? Mine is a 2003.

Cheers

After reading this iv now ordered the gear to do mine.Mine is 99 with a replacement engine (probably due to the bolt! So id hope its been done) Not taking any chances though

When I did mine (99 TD5 auto) at around 100k miles, the bolt was not tight and had worked out a thread or so,But not enough to stop turning the the drive(thank god).If you don't know for sure it has been done,I would just do it for peace of mind-the longest time for me was waiting for the loctite to go off, before refilling sump with oil

Just get it done pal, I was so involved with extending the brake lines, fitting the lift kit, big tyres, snorkel, winch..... Still kicking myself now

It was tight but upon removal it had zero threadlock on it.Bitch of a job as my crossmember bolts rounded so had to do it in situ

Good job, where did you get your gasket from? did you replace the bolt or threadlock the old one?
Miine is an 03, anyone heard of these coming loose?

Cheers
Neil

Gasket was from ebay and a new bolt with the yellow threadlock on.it was due a service and sump gasket leaking so loadsa jobs in one done.

now I read about this before I bought my td5 and its quite a common problem on the older ones, LR replaced the bolts on the later ones with yellow locktite, ill hunt down the link but it was way over a year ago I read it
