Got insurance on my first Defender yesterday. Have to say it was a bit of an arse to sort - no decent prices from comparison sites so I ended up giving our details over and over again on the phone to various companies.
Turned out the combination of a hardtop 90 (counted as a van by most insurance companies) and on street parking (not even considered by many specialist 4x4 insurers) made it quite hard to find a deal. Also, the fact that my wife and I have been driving company cars for years and thus don't have a no claims discount (although some companies took our company car experience into account)
For reference, Lancaster weren't interested in insuring a hardtop - they referred me to Sureterm. Unfortunately, Sureterm's 4x4 policy required off street parking and their standard policy resulted in a silly quote.
NFU Mutual gave me a quote of about £650
The best deal ended up being around £400 through Adrian Flux.
Hopefully by the time I need to renew the insurance I will have sorted some off street parking and I'll have more options. I'm also going to look into what security devices I can fit that might help with insurance.
