hi all yesterday i bought a freelander td4 2004 se. its a very nice motor and were very happy with it. the only niggle with it is today it has been making a faint tapping/faint knocking noise. its hard to make it do the noise but can be heard at aprox 2000 revs and low speeds while on low power. if you give it more or less gas it goes. its there regardless of clutch in or out. it can also be heard when stationary but its harder to hear. the car seems fine in everyway and pulls up to 80mph with no probs. coinsidentially my 59 transit has made a very similar noise since new, am i being picky or could it do with a garage check. i agreed a 3 month warranty so i'd like to get it sorted asap. thanks all

Difficult to say without hearing the noise, apart from the obvious like something loose and rattling against the engine or a dodgy engine mount, perhaps the timing chain tensioner or a sticking tappet in which case a flushing oil then and oil and filter change might help but its just a guess:)

before you start trying to fix this problem yourself, take it back under the warranty and get the vehicle supplier to sort it out.if you try yourself you might invalidate the warranty.;)

ok ive spoken to he dealer and they've said to bring it back so they can listen, i've narrowed it down. the noise is only present when you 'cover' the clutch pedal, i'e keeping your foot on the pedal after changing gear. if you take off your foot, it goes. it sounds like the wheel of fortune (ticking flicking noise) would this indicate worn clutch plate or is the engine noise being amplified through the hydraulic system somehow, because it sounds like its behind the speedo clocks area of the enginebay, thanks

sounds like a noisy thrust bearing, but i have a feeling the td4 uses a different arrangement, someone on here will know, meanwhile search for td4 clutch issues
