Just made the purchase on this guy yesterday. After familiarising myself with it on a drive from Melrose to Holyhead I have to say I'm very happy with it. A couple of little niggles with it but nothing major I don't think. Road noise is the first one but I imagine this is a pretty common problem with the hard top versions. Will have some searches here to see what can be done about that. The second one is the rear brakes making a grinding noise when slowing down to a stop. It doesn't happen at higher speed and the pads and discs are relatively new. If you'd any suggestions on what it could be it would be much appreciated.

Very tidy! Plenty of threads on soundproofing, shockingly once done the hardtops can be quieter due to now rattling rear windows!

Mix of Fatmat (cheaper Dynamat), closed cell foam (wont absorb water) and the rubber matting is the combo I have used. Can have a normal conversation at motorway speeds without shouting now. As its a hard top can line the sides with Fatmat/Foam then carpeted ply over the top, would kill the majority of the noise.

What you get with a Land Rover is what you get. The road noise is probably largely coming from the aggressive looking tyres.

Other than covering every panel internally with a dynamat type product and then a dense closed cell foam it's something you'll have to live with. Even the most modern ones are not close to a car in comfort or refinement.
Road noise, heavy controls and weekends spent outside tinkering is what you get. But if they were all that bad there wouldn't be the following that they have.
Without hearing the grinding noise I couldn't comment on the problem. Might be worth checking they've been fitted correctly.

Very first thing I tell people interested in buying a Land Rover or first time owners is make sure you can hold a spanner and can do basic jobs on it. Not only do you save money but land rovers need that extra input from the owner than a normal car. If all you do is get in and drive and that's it then that's when I find the issues pile on.

In a years time you'll probably have another parked on the drive and then another. I've got three. A series and two defenders.
But it looks like a decent buy you know, for one of them fancy new ones :p

+1 on the tyres being a source of noise. Although they arent desperately aggressive, they do have quite a few tread blocks on the tread part of the tyre, and the blocks round the outside are equally spaced, which often causes howl.

As banks says, soundproofing is the way to go, especially with a hard top. The metal box body is basically an amplifier for every little whine and vibration. Bit like the body of a guitar or other musical instrument.

Cheers for the pointers guys time to start getting my hands dirty with it! Its got 75,000 miles. Rear discs and pads are not as good as I thought so will be ordering some new ones.
