The biggest problem you'll have is that there is no lip on these square holes. It is just folded at 90degrees.
Looking at this picture in post 8 it looks like a lip is there.

My 1987 TD 90 is different and the old tub that I took off is the same as the replacement. The replacement was a pickup rear tub as it has the rope cleats on it and the original tub was a van as it doesn't have the rope cleats. Having had a closer look there is a good lip on each side but not top or bottom both of which are sloping
Great detail photos - thank you. I think that we could make a cover that wouldn't fall off. The only problem is that I don't see how we could make a drip edge on the top. Water running down the side of the vehicle would run right in.
It only got that way after a days ferretin'!!

dont know if a good idea or not.will keep my eyes open on pump tops at filling stations might just come across one someone forgot
