I've decided to finally buy my dream car, it is a decision made with my heart rather than brain and no doubt will bring issues. All I ask is some advice on purchasing a defender.

Such as, would you be able to get a decent 90 station wagon between 4-5 grand? How much more would I need to save for servicing etc? Are there any common parts that would be worthwhile buying due to the amount of replacements you'd go through like gaskets and filters?

I've spent some time reading through tips and hints such a full service history and a very thorough search for rust on the chassis and bulkhead are there any other advice on buying my first defender and are there any trusted dealers out there you have positive feedback for?

Thanks.

1. Get and say hello in the Intro section

2. Please please do a search as this exact question with same budget is asked nearly every week and it's starting to wear a bit thin.

3. Please never ask what the biggest tyres are you can fit

Hello. Good plan on buying a 90, I have had one for nearly a year now, and whilst it is completely in bits I have still enjoyed having it :D

Yep, I would have thought you would get a 90 for that. Probably a 200 or 300tdi. It may be a little on the rough side though, as prices have gone up recently and CSWs have always been popular.

Your location may help in terms of finding trusted dealers, but for that price you are probably best looking on ebay.

There aren't too many common parts that are changed often, can't think of any that you would need straight away. UJs on the prop shaft maybe. Head gaskets go at about 130k, but aren't too hard to do yourself.

Servicing is the same cost as any other car, engine oil and fuel filter. Plus some other filters if you feel like it. About £100 max.

When you get one PM me and I will send you some workshop manuals and stuff.

Common things to look for are rust (like you said) on the chassis (in particular the rear), bulkhead and doors. Check that the transfer box goes into high and low range ok, and also diff lock (slide lever to the left). And that the light goes out when you take diff lock off.
