My Engine is Possessed

Ah I see. I thought you were going to get all technical. I do understand there are 'direct inject' diesels (in ford Transits I think) which dont need glowplugs and I thought there might be some big difference like that.

yea there both TDi realy, just the common name for the earlier one is "The TD"

Err... not exactly. The TD has a 'swirl chamber' in the head that the diesel is injected into and then drawn out of and into the combustion chamber by the induction stroke of the engine. The Tdi doesn't have the swirl chamber and the diesel is injected into the combustion chamber immediately before full compression. The TD is indirect injection ;)

The Tdi will start quite happily under almost all circumstances without preheating with the glows - so they're not absolutely required. Personally I always use mine as it will start quicker (any diesel engine will with preheating) and more damage is done to any engine during the starting and warm up than at any other time.

The more modern diesels without glows typically run phenomenally high fuel pressures - I've heard of 1600 Bar which is in the region of 25,000psi - compared with the 600 Bar of a 300Tdi. Exactly how this reduces the need for preheating I dunno... but presumably the increased elecktrickery of the engine and far better timing available has something to do with it.

Hi Richard,

I've got the exact same thing happening to mine (87 110 TD) and as you, changed the Turbo.

We worked out it was the pump when we took the vacum pipe off between the pump and turbo. A majestic arc of dev made its way over my clothes :)

I reallllly don't want to go down the new pump route as that's around the £500 mark if there's a simple fix.

Thx

Rob

Well....thats is esaclty to the letter my story too :D Fix it? Errr.....ill get round to it....im sure i will.....

I kinda plugged the pipe and the turbo and closed the bonnet, no ones the wiser but ive lost some power. ;)

I think u can do a injecor pump overhall, but u gota pull off the cam belt to get at it, otherwise i woulda done it by now, i think the best bet for me anyway is to pay to hav it done. A new injector pump is £350, then theres labor on top of that, i was quoted £450 i seem to remember, including a new cam belt and injector pump  Bargin!

Rich.

Adz, the funny thing is you are using the glows whether you like it or not :p
Ignore the glow plug light because that lies. Switch on the ignition in a quiet place, watch the light go out and wait. After a few seconds depending on the temperature you will hear a click from a relay. That is the glows actually switching off. This is done to cut down on the emissions in the first few seconds of running. Though after that cloud of black smoke on startup which all Bosch pumps do it seems a bit of a waste of time :)

If i turn on the ignission on my old TD, let the light go out, leave it for a while (3 minits or whatever), then turn the motor the engine starts like the glows hav been on the whole time.

I do this somtimes cos i need the ignision on for the radio to work, i dont wantt he glows on while im listenin to the radio!

I'm not a Land Rover specialist but I own a garage / MOT station and have worked in workshops for 35 years, I have had this problem where excess oil is be sent into the inlet manifold via the breather system and the engine runs out of control on its own oil. I am not too familiar with the breather system on yours but disconnect it from the intake system and see what happens. PM me if you like and I'll try and help further.

If this is the problem it may still play about until any excess oil laying in the inlet manifold or intake is clear.
