Wouldn't believe the things I missed when I bought me 'new' Disco.

Thought,,,,,well nowt do do to it except change the oil and filters and it should be OK till spring.

Loads of service history, mint inside, great chassis, clean under the bonnet and looked like it had been looked after.
Suppose it had but the niggles are starting to appear now I've used it a few times.

The gearchange is crap, hard to know where you are shoving it when going into the next gear, bias seam to be heavy towards first and second, are they all like that? Thought it was me at first and maybe I would get used to it but I'm not sure I like it.

Brakes are ok but if you press em more than twice then no servo assistance. - I'm looking at that as soon as.

Nearside headlamp is dim on both dip and high beam. - another job to do in the cold.

Engine takes forever to warm up, looks like I need a thermostat.

Interior light dont work in the back. - well it should.

Rear wiper motor is noisey. - well it shouldn't be.

There is a massive water leak into the passenger compartment from outside. It runs in if you wash the windscreen, the water runs down the passenger side gearbox tunnel just about below the line of the dashboard. - must be a grommet missing or something.

Can't think of owt else for now but I'm sure it will deteriorate as time goes on, that's the way my luck runs these days.

1. The gear lever rest position is an easy cheap fix. It will almost certainly be a broken bias plate on top of the gearbox. The plate costs about £5 from an LR dealer plus two new springs at £1 each.

2. The dim headlight is often caused by a burnt out electrical connector, replace with new.

3. Replace the thermostat £4 from Paddocks, also remove the viscous fan.

Thanks for that, I thought the gearlever shouldn't be llike that. Would you believe I was told that they were all like that.

The viscous fan is very free spinning in that it spins slower than the engine speed and can be stopped with one finger when ticking over so it's not that that is cooling the motor.
I will remove it though when I do the cam belt in January.

I'll try and look at the lamp this week as well but things a bit hectic at the mo with getting your pressie and all:D

'New' Disco door lock is VERY stiff, dont know if it has central locking or not. The passenger door is easy and unlocking the drivers door is easy but almost impossible to lock.

Got new thermostat and oil an filters and cambelt, so goin to be busy over christmas.
Might do the thermostat tomorrow as it is takin about 10 miles to warm up propperly.

same as this end,
i've an 11 year old one,
and it's showing its age.
Bias Plate, door locks, bad earths, rear wiper working
on dry days only, rear interior light whenever, crumbling electrical connectors.
And you have the joy of over torqued bolts, rounded nuts from previous belt changers, and stripped threads on tensior pulley to come when you do the timing belt,
i thought i'd found a peach too!
wouldn't and couldn't be without it though.

i bort a v8 thort that was great till the gearbox fecked up but now its had a recon box its fantastic, believe it or not no problems at all and even more surprising no rust... cats are on the way out tho :(

Not just me then.:D
Dont mind fixin it up, just thought I'd bought one that would see me through the winter but people don't maintain em any more, not untill they break that is.
No screen wash to the rear as well, is it fed off the front resevoir?

i'll have a look tomorrow, beats goin shoppin anyway, just been to Asda and it was packed at 10.30pm, peoples buyin the shop up:rolleyes:

we got a 94 300 tdi two day later the trailing arm bracket on the axle snapped off, then rear wheel bearing, both rear shocks and bushes, stat, door locks springs. all this in two months lol,but still cheap to fix thou. We have the same problem with the lock on drivers side, but only on some days. Great motor thou we love it and have become a disco family

im currently sat outside an asda trying to deliver food. wagons are queuing round block to get in, 2 hour wait 4 me :( oh well plenty of time for landyzone :)
Bin there done that, just chill that's all yer can do and think of the overtime:D
Worst one I worked for was Kwik Save, drivers wouldn't talk to me and I wasn't allowed in the back of the trailer, not worried about that though 'cause they all was mingin.

Did a quick sercice on the engin today, would you believe it, the gearbox is caked in oil wheras the engine is clean as a whistle.... missed that one:rolleyes:
Engine oil was not too bad but due for changing, the air filter was rusty and mingin, the oil filter was hand tight and looked not too old and wasn't too heavy when I took it off which is a good sign that it aint been on that long.
Put 12 pints of oil in and waited but nowt on the stick:eek:...put another two in and it come up. Run the engine for a minute to fill the new filter and switched off for everthing to settle and dipped it again. Bang on the mark, went for a brew and then dipped it again, bang on the mark so I recon it's ok.
Drives loverly now with new oil and filters:rolleyes: peace of mind anyway.

Had a go at gettin the thermostat housing off, ffs why do they use 8mm bolt heads for something that is going to rust in after a few years, one cracked off and the other two rounded off. Gave up and joined the traffic to come home......chocka block with shopping traffic.

Havin a go at the thermostat bolts after christmas, any tips ??

well,
for my rounded of bolts i'm going to grind the heads of and then use one of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370301157768#ht_717wt_941
OR , and this could turn out better, someone has offered to loan me a socket set especially for rounded of bolts, i haven't seen it yet, so i dont know what its about, but i'll pick it up in the next couple of weeks and let you know, if you are still in the same position.

Managed to get a small imperial socket that just fitted on with a tap from me big hammer and cracked the last one off no trouble. Removed the thermostat cover and found that I'd left the thermostat in the boot of me brothers car five miles away and he was out so put it back on till tomorrow. Might even have the wrong thermostat because this one has a gasket like a Mini and the one I bought has a rubber ring to seal it. Maybe right, I'll see tomorrow.
Checked the MPG tonight and it was 26mpg which is understandable. I now have a new air filter and when the engine is running up to temp it should return nearer thirty running about.

Put a new thermosatat in today and checked the temp sender unit by earthing it out. The gauge started to climb from cold and I stopped at about threequarters the way to hot.
Changing the thermostat has changed nowt, it still takes a long time to get warm and the five mile drive home only warmed it up, it didn't get hot like it should. Mind you I did take the plastic bag off the grill 'cause I thouht I wouldn't need it any more.
Any way, went out to Tesco to get the pop in for tomorrow and the engine warmed up straight away but not hot as it was only a mile to drive.
Strange thing happened on the way back though. the lights coming out of Tesco went to amber and, like you do, I floored it to get through and took it up to three and a half thousand revs in second, almost instantly my legs became warmer and the heater was a lot better, gauge still on cold though, must have finished the sender off with me earthin out test.
So the result of today is that the engine is gettin warm but it must take forever as the weather is very cold. There must be a problem with water circulating through the heater as it was better when the engine reved a lot and forced water round he system.
I'll get a new sender in the morning to fix the gauge reading and check for any air locks.
Owt else that can be done or are they just crap heaters on a Disco ??

the only time my one gets hot is when i hoof it on the motorway, it rises hits red then will drop to half way again, when i resume normal speed,
lot of crap on my radiator that needs blowing out, dryed mud etc, and am gonna replace thermostat. Then i'll hoof it again and see where its at.
May Fit an electric fan too, as the factory one is on constantly.
Had a similar gremlin with the heater gurgling, when i drained the rad and changed coolant, but after a few top ups and hose squeezing, and a few runs it settled down and all works efficiently now, in fact the heater on mine(98 300 tdi) is very toastie.

Heaters on Discos are usually good, so something is not right.

Have you checked your water pump?
