Guys

2001 overland spec 110 - full rack, tent, canopy, long range fuel tank, water tank, winch and bumper etc.

Problem is it rolls like a pig in a corner. It has HD emu springs and shocks, no roll/sway bar at front or back. It drives fine in a straight line and on a washboard road its great but put it into a corner and hold on - front outside dips back inside lifts - big time.

Ive just been accepting it as its the way it is until I drove a mates 110 at the weekend with same shocks ans springs and the drive is WAY better.

So -

Is my suspension jus worn out - do springs wear
Is it because I have no front or back anti roll bars - what should I have as standard?
What stops body roll? air helper springs any good? add roll bar - front or back or both?double shocks?

Had her weighed yesterday - 2,600kg with minimal kit in boot no driver no water (in tank) and less than half tank of diesel - 2,600 kg unladen so when im on a trip with full fuel, driver passengers grub, beer, water she'll be over 3,500kg easy !!!

Any ideas to improve handling?

I have just rebuilt my landy with quite a lot of added weight as I have roof rack and drawer system and mine is the same, the handling is terrible. I have used heavy duty springs and shocks. I have no anti roll bar on either and I was contemplating fitting it back on but I would have to make a few adjustments because it is raised slightly. I have also spoken to Terrafirma who have also said replace the roll bar or get heavier duty shocks. Have you had your suspension for some time as it may be tired as well as perhaps not used to the extra weight or has the landy always been like this? I will be fitting heavier duty shocks and see how that goes but i am sure you will hear a lot of opinions here.

Anti roll bars gents, the clue is in the name. :p :D

Having them removed will make off road activities easier but your on road suffers as youve found out. Put them back on for vice versa.

Have you tried double shock rear mounts? Probably a good idea with the weight your carrying. Dont know if it will help the roll but it might save your shocks if your carrying all that weight all the time.

A cargo net would help with that............oh sorry I thought you'd writ that yer pig rolled around in the corners :hysterically_laughi:p

my 110 started to rock on corners, i changed the rear a frame to chassis bushes and it handles a lot better

Does the 110 in question have a self leveler fitted? THese can make a huge difference.

I have no anti-roll bars and standard springs on my 110 csw and added helper springs to keep the ride stable while still being a soft ride.

It's worth checking tyre pressures too as this can make a big difference.

Guys thanks -

So - more questions.

The suspension has been on since I bought the car and I think its done its fair share of offroading before I bought it and Ive done a fair bit. I knew shocks would wear but do springs wear and become softer?

What anti roll bars should my car have as standard? Front and back or just front or just back?

Double rear shocks - was thinking about this like the idea but again not sure it will take out the roll - same thinking on air helper springs that sit inside the springs - anyone got these?

Car has always handled like cr*p but Ive always accepted it until I frove a mates the other day with same set up just slightly lighter vehicle and his handles great.

yes they sag with age and usage

both front and back as standard on a TD5

see Rattys post above he has them fitted. and the link below Many companies do them but this is the thing ratty is on about
Helper Spring for Land Rover Defender (NOT NAS) 200Tdi RRC3266 - all

Car has always handled like cr*p but Ive always accepted it until I frove a mates the other day with same set up just slightly lighter vehicle and his handles great. Do you have a roof rack? roof tent? awning? jerry cans on the roof? hi-lift? etc etc? anything mounted on the roof is going to raise your centre of gravity, i know it frees up room inside but compromise is needed.
Hope that helps

Thanks Guys - Ratty whats a self leveler? I have a vaque recolection that my old RRC had one where the A frame ball joint is on the landy?

Gidday Lads,
I drive a 110 300 Tdi Wagon. I had the same problems. I would check the rear lower control arm bushes. Cheap fix. I also fitted rear air bags, and added air to them as my load increased...excellent. Then added a Disco 1 rear sway bar. Fixings should be on chassis, if not weld on a coupe of brackets...slightly better. But the best thing was the 130 front sway bar. Big and thick(like me). Had to weld on some brackets to the chassis rails but all other fixings where on the diff etc. Made a HUGE difference. In fact first corner i took it did seem to understeer, because the body wasn`t rolling as much. Great on road, but of coarse not the articulation of road. If one could remove the front sway bar easily for off road that would be brilliant. Could take 20 minutes and a spanner or two. Of course good quality springs and shocks also help, but that goes without saying. Good luck!

Guys - thanks very much for the replis...

So one last question - will Discovery front and rear roll bars fit my 110 Td5 2000, salisbury axle on rear.

What tyres you got ?

On standerd 235/85/16 tyres I used to **** myself everytime I did a motorway lane change in my 110 with the roof rack loaded. Changed to 265/75/16 and made a world of difference !

Try and keep your centre of gravity as low as possible, lightest stuff on rack, heavy stuff down staires as low as possible !
