As for the welding it comes with practice and i've had plenty since owning land rovers

Update time

Today i changed the rear axle. Which was much more difficult than the front

Less room than up front oddly and the tank and tow plate didn't help matters either.

But got there in the end So here's the pictures.

If you have to move the gearbox crossmember will you make a bolt on one?

I think i have to move it, not a case of if! But yes i will definitely make it removable will make box changes easier at least

Have just been out and measured for a comparison.

This is what I'm fitting. Just finished cleaning it up and putting it together ready to go on.



Series transmission length including v8 adaptor. 28.5"
LT77 with disco LT230 38"

I do have a disco gearbox crossmember lying about still so will see if that fits if not will make my own or see if i can adapt the disco one to fit.

Hopefully should start ripping the series box out over the next week

You need a defender box really if not you're going to end up with the lever in the seatbox centre

Can you buy short input shafts shafts? I know i can get the short bellhousing from ashcrofts but don't know about the shaft.

Bit of a set back today

LT77 isn't gonna fit, unless i want the gear lever in the seat box.

And here's the new plan

I have a R380 that's in need of a new mainshaft and will be rebuilding this now.

So as well as the new mainshaft, I shall also be ordering a master rebuild kit from ashcroft transmissions, along with their stubby pinion shaft and bellhousing. So will have a stumpy R380 unfortunately not all of this will be ordered at once due to other commitments so this may take a couple of months

Stubby pinion shaft will need to be taken to a machine shop however to fit the smaller V8 spigot bearing. And will need to be ground down or machined down not sure which.

And here's the box in question





Tonight i managed to get the selector housing off and also the selector yoke.

Tomorrow i shall be taking the box to work so i can then remove the oil seal collar on the mainshaft, get the tail housing out the way, then undo the stake nut on layshaft with a windy gun. Once that's done i should be able to get the rest of it apart

I'm just glad i have a destruction manual to look through whilst doing it

Fair do's youve done some great stuff on her. Well done and keep going. Is the oil filter ok on thst front axle? I know youve upgraded axles so it may be totally fine but I know some people have ****ted the filter off at extreme articulation.

Pinion wants putting on a crank grinder, that way its perfect. Cylindrical grinder will do at a push but my local guy said crank grinder is the best way and thats how he did it.

Cost me a fiver

Oil filter is getting changed for a remote one at some point i reckon. Although when i fit the r380 i may lift engine and boxes up in the chassis to give me a bit more clearance and leave as is. Or most likely not as i do want to fit parabolics soon.

I'll go have a word with a local machine shop to see if they can do it for me

Not something i want to cock up if I'm rebuilding the box.

R380 has started to be stripped properly

Oil seal retainer on mainshaft has been removed (with heat and pry bars, not a puller ), back casing has been removed along with oil filter, and so has the layshaft stakenut.

The stakenut was an absolute pig to undo though. Ended up using a cold chisel to get the bugger off as no amount of heat or brute force and ignorance would undo it




Tomorrow i can start pulling the rest of it apart now the hard parts are out of the way with

i wouldnt be using heat to remove parts ,nut comes up done easily with air gun ,looks like its been rarely serviced

I didn't want to but was getting desperate. unfortunately don't have access to an airgun.

Mainshaft on the other hand i wasn't worried about as that's being replaced. Along with anything else that doesn't look right. Will undoubtedly find more wrong as i delve deeper.

And your right there is a hell of a lot of play in everything. It's definitely in need of a rebuild.

Mainshaft stripped, and all bearings removed from both shafts.





Only thing left to do is get bearing races out of the casings.

Will continue with this soon, might not be able to afford all the bits to get it back together this month so may have to wait

Cheers and I'm on it almost got it plumbed up just need to do the wiring and hopefully she'll be good to start.

I'm hoping my leafer will do that
Since owning it I've gone right off coilers


Made these earlier on too.




Will get a photo of them roughly attached tomorrow once they are both welded up properly

One slider welded up and dressed back



Just need to angle and cap the ends and work out how I'm going to attach them to the chassis.
