Hello mud pluggers,

Just got home from the balloon fiesta in Bristol which has finished in a bit of a washout.
The trailer parks were very muddy and the only way I could get to our balloon trailer was to reverse up a short incline.
I tried reverse gear, low ratio at a slow speed and only got half way with loads of wheel spin. Then someone else moved and I could drive in another way and got hitched up ok.
My question is, if I had used diff lock would my chances have improved in reverse gear. i'm not much of an off roader so would apreciate any tips in these type of situations.
The Landy was great all
weekend going forward and beat lots of the foreign stuff even with my crap driving.

Thanks Sean,
So when I select diff lock I should not be moving.
Does it help to touch the brakes lightly when doing this type of driving to fool the gearbox into thinking there is a bit more grip or have I read this this wrong in another fred.

That can sometimes help, but it also applies the same braking force to the opposite wheel so doesn't always.

You can engage difflock while moving, as long as there isnt a large difference between wheel speeds, i.e. one wheel is spinning and the rest arn't - the shock loading when it locks will damage your transmission.

But yes, difflock would have almost certainly made it up the hill! Sometimes taking a run up is a good plan also, but can make a big mess of fields esp. if you are using lots of throttle, and its not very controlled either.

I think I need to find a very basic pay and play site to try out the old diff lock and other things and see just how good the Landy will perform.
Anyone know of one in my area ?
I don,t want to climb up walls or drive over tree trunks, just bit's of muddy rutted ground will do me.

Sounds like you were trying one of the more difficult manoeuvres! Definately diff lock, possibly tick over high range.

minety is an excellent site for beginners to try stuff. dont go to Foxham. also worth a try would be Dundry, but im not sure if thats gone under :(

diff lock is explained on the fuse cover box "if traction is lost", Diff lock works great on wet grass. basically if it dont work in low, try low diff, if that dont work, try high diff if that dont work try something else! this only works for the slower stuff of coarse. Use high when you need a bit more grunt. its more trial and error than anything. If you drive about in a cutout trayback 90, the same gear wont work in a fully loaded 130. you see what i mean?

suck it and see ;)

I take it from what you said you have been to foxham too. Did you find it too extreme and almost competition type? I took my last 110 there and the ruts were so deep and sharp I had problems getting around the corners at the top of the hills let alone trying to make it through the ditches. If you didn't have a 90 you didn't stand much chance of getting around.

Even closer is Xtreme Offroad - the South West’s premier off road driving experience centre which is at Churchill.

Much more civilised and safer than Dundry - also do instruction which seems like a sensible idea in the cirumstances.

Alternatively, as it seems required for your job, why not ask your employer to fund a Land Rover Experience course for the balloon/retrieval team. They are pricey but a darn sight cheaper than rolling a vehicle, killing a client and destroying the balloon!

Cheers
