Hi, I just new here and thinking about getting a freelander for the wife. I have got 7/8k to spend and have looked at both V6s and TD4s. For my cash I can get a 2001 V6 ES with 30k or a 2001 TD4 with 80k. What MPG do they do real world on school/shopping run and what problems should I be looking out for.

Any help gratfully received. Richy...

Hi richy, if its any help,a mate of mine has a 2001 td4 ES that has done 120k & reckons he can get 42mpg if he lays off the welly & thats fitted with the steptronic 5speed autobox.mucky`un.

Hi Richy777. . . i have a auto td4 with a gismo [go faster thingy] and though I'm not a mpg freak ,know i get 40mpg on motorway at bout 69.999 mph[no faster officer],but in town that goes down to say 32/34 no more, and thats light foot driving. . . hope this helps ya , Ming

Thanks for the info, I was working on a td4 returning 30/36 mpg and a V6 18/24 mpg. Just trying to work out the cost diffrance between the two.

I have had TD4 Manual for last 4 years done about 60,000 miles in that time and the obverall average fiuel consumption is 31.97 - I am a sad retired with nothing better to do than keep a spreadsheet withh all fuel purchases/milage on it! That includes quite a considerable amount towing a substancial caravan, motorway use, shopping and general messing around and quite thirsty country lane/forestry roads following my hobby as a motor sport timekeeper/marshal. 34mpg is the average around town.
Hope this is useful

About two months ago i was in the same position as yourself, i opted for the lower milage V6 as opposed to the high milage TD4's. Although on a long run you can see 25mpg urban is around 18mpg. Mine is the steptronic gearbox option.

Although the fuelling costs are higher, servicing is cheaper and with high milage i had the worry of transmission failure on my mind.

The poke of the engine is fantastic for pulling off round abouts and towing a caravan or trailer.

Go for the V6 in my opinion you can make a massive saving on the purchase price because everyone wants a diesel.

after owning a disco diesel for 6 years, i treated myself to a 2002 v6 es,
never looked back since, diesels o.k for the fuel econ, but service cost are high, and twice a year ! i found one saveing out weighed the other, so after a years motoring you dont get any benifits.
yes o.k the v6 might seem heavy on fuel, but you save on other expence.
my m.p.g ? around 23 round town, and 27 on a run under 85 mph, take it over that and sit back and watch the needle go down ( 17 / 20 mpg ).
the other up side of a v6, you will never be left behind by a td4, bags and bags of power, 130+ mph.
so its up to you, power and pay or suck it and see !

Thanks for all you replys, You have confirmed about what I though. The car will only be covering about 4/5000 miles a year so a nice low milage V6 might be my best option. She currently drives a V6 Vectra which does about 27mpg over the last 3000 miles all local journeys. My only other worry was concerning what would be the most realiable TD4 or V6, ( or should I go, dare I say it? RAV4?)

RAV 4are you on drugs ?
you have not looked into the service cost have you ?
it has to be said the new rav is a nice looker, but its all looks !
realiability ! well, looking at all the problems on here with the td4 and my local
dealer steering me away, id go for a v6 any time, but then again i just love the power and smothness of that v6 with the tiptronic gearbox, you just dont get that sort of refinement with jap-crap, think of all the goodys you get on an
e.s model.
do your self justice, take both cars out for a test drive, make up your own mind !

I did a similar thing in changing from a 1997 V6 Calibra to a 2001 V6 ES, ok the 0-60 is never the same but still bags of power and the fuel economy is only slighlty worse (i put it down to aerodynamics).

Gas conversion is an option i'm looking into now.

Oh how I miss my cally! the aerodynamics of the cally was awesome! I had a 2.016v ecotec it went well at 100+ purely becuase of the aerodynamics, in being the freebie I have certainly noticed this, my freebie does on average about 32 thats combined motorway and urban, which is about the same as my old cally although my old cally at the higher speeds on a motor way was returning nearly 40mpg!!!! I have a 2001 td4 gs manual.

I used to have an old Opel Manta A 19S (96 bhp), back in the late '60's, kept it 13 years and did 186.000 kms with it. Loved it almost as much as I love the Hippo now.

I am still looking for a freelander still havnt decided V6 or TD4, it wil depend on which one I find first, I have looked at a 2001 ,51 V6 ES, 31K full landy history 1 owner for £7000. It seems a bargain to me, what do you think? and Will I enjoy a Freelander after having a V6 SRI veccy? or will it be slow and boat like?

I have bought the same as what you are looking you at, and my last car was similar in terms of power and performance (and a bit more, ah ah ah), i am extreamely happy with my purchase and the handling is spot on, (albeit it does wallow on round-abouts) you just need to drive it different to a car. Once you've done that....

Welcome to the Land Rover Club.

you are of course right the calibras have had their day they are for the chavs and is the exact reason why I sold mine, mine looked so sweet it seemed that everyone around where I lived decided that they could turn their rusty 2.0 8v into a sexy turbo. The result :- a chav mobile with stickers and a max power sign on the windscreen arrrrrgh it had to go. unfortunatly I am craving bhp now and the thought of going 140mph again, my ford focus company car can only scrabble to 120mph on a good day, I am just not getting my daily/weekly speed fix!!!

I do find the V6 model surprisingly quick when accelerating off a round about on the A1. It just takes a lot to stop it at 115mph...

is it just me and you trev?!! :) :) :) :) I know what you mean on the stoppin bit I really think they could of done with bigger discs on the front and discs on the back... I wonder if there's a conversion?

Well if your pocket is deep enough try A P Racing and fit some 10 pot calipers?

But i doubt they make an off the shelf kit though.

Yes i think also its a shame bout freelanders having drums on the rear. . .if it had discs would be a lot more easy to clean [dont ya think] Ming
