I've managed to install the custom spring for giving the bonnet extra lift. As many know already having a tyre mounted on the bonnet has it's own set of challenges, the main one being the release catch not giving the primary spring enough lift.
Prior to this I was using a wooden wedge to keep it from closing all the way. If I didn't do this it meant a two man job to get the bonnet to release. One to pull the lever, the other to lift the bonnet.
Whilst at work I had a spring and steel plate welded together. Now I had to drill a hole in the frame and get a washer and nut in.
It wasn't easy, so I got the grill out of the way and managed to get my hand in. Spring washer fell out during the struggle and went on with just the flat washer then the bolt. The spring sits in the hole pretty nicely though
This weld might look pretty to the eye but part of it fractured when the weight was put on it!
The other side held though. I might have to get the other side rewelded though.
The bonnet closes but the release catch was in the way so I trimmed the metal press plate a bit with tin snips and wrapped it in tape.
The spring doesn't catch now and when I drop the bonnet it closes nicely to the release catch but no further. So as it's just a bit too big, I'll be looking to cut the spring down a coil or two later.
First off the bat was getting the spring plate I’d bolted in adjusted.
Too many rings were on it and the main spring catch wasn’t engaging.
Out came garth’s grinder and it was neither one, nor two but three rings of the spring plate sheared off before the bonnet would close. The grinders disc went through the rings with ease despite being stainless.
Then the moment of truth. I pulled the release lever
One resounding ‘klung’ later and it popped open!
Job done.
