I recieved my paperwork from Nene Overland for my D90 (used) and included was a MOT certificate, good till Jan 2011.

I went up on the MOT website and did a search with the number and got a pretty detailed report on my vehicle. Very helpful.

My question is, if the MOT fails a vehicle for some reason and then passes it again on the same date, what does this mean?
Did the owner go away and fix the problem and come back and get it re-inspected?

Sorry, we have no MOT inspections in the Bahamas.

Thanks.

ye or they may have had it fixed on the day by the garage/mot tester etc other than that im unsure

no mots lucky begger me and my landys would get on well over there then :D

Yes, it means exactly that!

Often the faults will be small, so they can be rectified within a day. Also, if its done by the same garage, they might not in fact put it back into the MoT bay to 're-test' it - for example if it failed on a track rod end, and a mechanic (who isn't the MoT tester) replaced it, the MoT tester will trust that its been repaired and okay, thus saving some time in their busy working days.

For info what faults did it fail on, which were rectified within the day? Does anything stand out as being a feat of mechanical miracle, to be fixed within 8 hours or so?

All simple stuff, nail in a tyre, exhaust leaks, faulty windsheild wipers, corroded propshaft, bald tyre.....................

Was more interested in how the inspections are done.

So they do these inspections at local garages?
If so wouldnt this be a conflict of interest for the mechanic/tech?

Yes, in the UK inspections are done at a local garage which might also do the repairs. And yes....without analysing things too much, a conflict of interest is possible! They may MoT cars too harshly thus "generating" unnecessary work for the garage, which of course they know will then pass. It tends to only happen in less successful garages a long way down the food chain, since successful ones get a good rep and dont need to artificially generate work, they are busy anyway.

The MoT scheme is a funny thing. For example, an MoT tester can test his own car. I've known an MoT tester about to retire, and his last test was to test his own car - and he found a fault and failed it.

No they can't. Against the rools.
If VOSA find out he'll be in trouble.

Maybe? I dont know.

Here's another link, the official one, with all the Mot rules & regs:

There's also a website somewhere with VOSA newsletters and bulletins - your son will know it, since he's a tester - have a flick through back issues and see if there's been recent updates.
