Hello all, im fairly new to the world of Land Rovers. I have recently picked up a Defender 90 with a list of problems having gone through a pre MOT service at a Land Rover Dealer.

I would like advice on which of these are MOT failures and which are just the Land Rover Dealershipo trying to make money!

I will do all of them eventually, but just want to get it on the road ASAP!

Also which jobs are a pig and best left to prfessionals?

Thank you in advance

I hope this car was cheap!!!

basics:

Brakes
Lights
Seatbelts
Rust

get these sorted as a start, but you've still a lot to do before you get a certificate with a list like that!

No throttle!!!! :)

You might get a better response if you type up the list so someone can just quote your list and say "yes, no, maybe"

At present it would involve me writing your list up so i could answer your question... life's too short.

BLoody hell.

I hope you were paid to take this away....

By looks of it most of those jobs need doing before MOT and some are piece of cake (lights etc) and some are weekend jobs, X member etc

Seriously how much did you pay?

and can you take some pics of the so called rusty areas?

may not be as bad as it sounds!

I did pick up the car for a bargin, with advice that it would cost me around the 1K mark to get it on the road.

List below as advised.

1,Rear X member rusty
2,Rear bump stops missing
3,OSR top shock bush worn (no standard shocks)
4,Rear link bushes worn

23,Number plate light not working
24,No reverse light
25,No Fog light
26,Bad earth on OSR

29,Wiper blades split (spindle drums worn)
30,Bulkhead top rusty
31,No throttle
32,Handbrake comes right back

I already typed the list for you ;)

I think 1k to get it on the road is reasonable if you repair chassis.

If you replace add another 2k to that.

No throttle!!!! :)

Im not sure what the no throttle comment is about, there is throttle and drives in low and high range

1,Rear X member rusty - depends on how rusty
2,Rear bump stops missing - ??
3,OSR top shock bush worn (no standard shocks) - new bush
4,Rear link bushes worn - as above
5,Rear Axle ball joint worn - possibly,
6,Front radius arm bushes worn new -bush
7,Drag link boot split (split pin missing)
8,Track rod joint out of alignment
9,Front prop
10,Front T.box flange has lift -not mot, but needs sorting
11,T.box oil leak - not mot if not too bad
12,Rear prop lower UJ worn - not mot but need sorting priority
13,Handbrake loose (drum) - adjust it
14,Chassais rusty steering box area - how rusty, surface or penetration?
15,Front brake in poor condition - mot probably,
16,NSF footwell rusty - ??
17,Rear number plate cracked (ladder covers plate) - get new number plate, I d leave the ladder till mot, that ones down to opinion
18,Steering box UJ loose (Steering box end) - replace
19,Header tank loose - not mot afaik, depends on how loose
20,Drivers seat belt damaged - how much damage??
21,Bottom hose rubs steering arm - not mot afaik, but easy to sort
22,OSF side light not working - check lamps, earths etc
23,Number plate light not working - as above
24,No reverse light - not mot item
25,No Fog light - lamps/earths/switch
26,Bad earth on OSR - fix earth, presumably causing lighting issues, so mot item
27,No windscreen washers - another mot item, pump, switch, no water??
28,Chip in windscreen - depends on where
29,Wiper blades split (spindle drums worn) - new blades
30,Bulkhead top rusty - how rusty??
31,No throttle - wtf???
32,Handbrake comes right back already had that one...

one of those nice to look at fenders, but a dog underneath, mines the otherway around, solid underneath, a bot of a dog on the top (slowly sorting that though)

Right..

The old list looks scary, below are the items that I would like advice for (Sorry put the first list up too quick, trying to do it quickly whilst at work)!

A,Rear link bushes worn
B,Rear Axle ball joint worn
C,Front radius arm bushes worn
D,Drag link boot split (split pin missing)
E,Track rod joint out of alignment
F,T.box oil leak

Advice as to whether or not they are MOT failures and how easy they are to fix.

Thank you in advance

Lee

D, most likely, split pins and split boots seem to get pulled up

Not sure what E means.

Oil leak, unless its gushing, wouldnt be a fail

worn bushes/joints are down the opinion on how work is too worn (ie how much play is acceptable), going by my landys previous advisorys, 3 years running had advisorys for front suspension bushes.

IMO, either take it for an mot, see what it fails on, or fix the obvious, like the washer jets etc, and go from there.

Doesn't look *that* bad. It was a stealer, so I'd take what they said with a fist full of salt.

How rusty is rusty? Lil bit of surface rust, or holes? Get pics.

Worn bushes, aye that's not unusual.. how worn? Falling apart with play worn, or a few years left worn?

Get your arse under and take pics of the worst bits.

I'd fix the obvious mot failures and then take it to an indie landy place for an mot and let it fail. Least that way you get a real list of mot failures.

with a list like that im starting to think someone sold you my defender whilst ive been at work?
