Series 3 mot fail

also where does the oil drip from if the rear crank seal has gone? now I cleaned up the bottom I think it may just be coming out of the back of the sump cover which would be rather fab because I won't have to attempt a rear crank seal yet

The drain hole in the bellhousing normally.

If you're leaking oil at the back of the sump where the engine meets the aluminium bell housing then it's probably a leak from the large o ring rather than the rear main seal. The rear main seal would leak from the little threaded hole in the front of the aluminium bell housing. Unless it's a major leak then I wouldn't worry about it. A wipe off just prior to the MOT might be a cunning plan.

Put it back it may still hatch. Have you seen any tractors hanging round with a large grin.

thx for the replies chaps, sounds good on the oil leak front, wasn't looking forward to doing that rear seal, hopefully when craddocks finally deliver I will no longer be leaky

we only get Chelsea tractors round here don't think they would fancy an old series.

Oh I don't know about that. Those posh tratters love a bit of rough every now and again.

got a bit closer, connected all the electrics back up and they work large scotch in order, routed them over the top of the front panel in some conduit, so if I have to take it off again all I need to undo is one earth and the horn wires.

apparently the courier tried to deliver the sump gasket and bolts on Tuesday when I was in all day and working out the front, I assume the van had a cloaking device and the card they left was invisible

all being well the bits will arrive Monday so I should be able to go for mot on wed or fri with confidence.

Did you notice a large blue lump of snot driving past. He may have had trouble with your 25 gallons of instant gasket...............

well the gasket arrived nicely scrunched up to fit in a box, and I kid ye not, this is a photo of the two "identical" water pump bolts I ordered, you couldn't make this up wonder which one I would have got if I had ordered a single bolt

the longer one looks right, luckily I only need one, ordered 2 as I had to pay the min post charge anyway, I just don't have a spare, I'm sure I will use the other on something and they were only a few pennies.

well its all back together, still a bit of oil oozing out from the back of the sump - not as bad as before so I an guessing there is an imperfection there

Have you used any sealant on the gasket? That would be my next move.

Are you sure the leak is not between the engine / flywheel housing - the huge o ring seal? Always runs down the back of the sump just the same.

yes I used hylomar blue I shall have another look tomorrow seemed to be bubbling out, when I took the old gasket out there was oil over and under it at the back

Ok, might be worth checking the sump with an engineers straight edge. They are easy to over tighten and distort which may have happened over the years. Wondering if a RTV sealant would be more forgiving.

I took a straight edge and emery cloth to mine to see just how bad it was.


It was very bad.

The gasket that was already on was a thick rubber type one

The one that came in the post was a thin paper one. It wouldnt have had a chance with my sump.

my gasket was paper thin as was the old one, I see lr parts shop have some genuine lr ones for £18 but you can't tell if they are any better there is no photo

got the sump off again, looks like the sump to block contact is rubbish at the back, gasket is stuck to the block but oil has seeped under the gasket all round the back on the sump side.

if they still made the rubber ones they would most likely be the ticket
