Good evening all last year i had two n/s track rod end and front airbag perishing .I have just passed today with no advisory they have told me that new rules state they no longer give advisorys . I have left it a year will now change air bags but feel that this new way of doing things will leave people more prone to failures .For instance where a taper bearing on a defender would just need a tighten to take up play. Is this right? has anybody else experienced this any thoughts suggestions welcome
 
Erm, thats not even slightly correct, they just havent bothered, advisories are still given if anything has been found. I would get another garage to check it over and if your unsure on your general condition
 
i would say that the mot guy has no idea how to test a defender and what to look for (play or wear ).older generation mechanics know about that type of setup and where to look just bought a defender last friday mot advised on rear brake pipe 28 miles later after steam cleaning the under side on way home the brakes failed and i filled my pants i have always asked my friend to be hard on my car .
 
I dont trust many garages. I put my wifes corsa into National Tyres last week for 2 rear tyres as MOT was due. They advised me over the phone it needed front discs and pads.Fine, I will do them myself was my reply.Utter Bollocks, it sailed through the MOT and I was speaking to the tester in the boozer on Friday night. He said the brakes are fine but did advise on a drop link.
 
Sorry didn't make myself clear I own a r r I was giving defender as an example . Well he said he can't do an advisory as it has not failed strange but true ,like I got to wait for it to fall off .

Its not really anything to do with the design of the car, if there is play theres play, you dont need to understand the vehicle, the mechanic still needs to advise such as 'play in nearside front hub', doesnt matter if they understand swivals e.t.c...

As for brake pipes, they are hard to tell, it should always be advised they are corroded but you can never tell exactley how much, we have had them fail on the ramp here before and they looked okish...

Sounds about right, national garages suffer from this as they are pressured into sales from head office, unfortuantly discs and pads are common for these places as they are cheap and easy plus a pretty standard part. I have had them tell me before I need this and that (I had a puncture away from home) and when I pointed out im my own mechanic they started to back track

That is total rubbish, he is talking out his arse. An advisory is given to any testable item that is showing signs of wear or corrosion but is not in a failable condition. Any items the tester is unsure on should always be passed and advised. This mechanic is either not paying attention and flying through the MOT's or just cant be arsed to write it into the computer...
 
That's why i always use the local council to get my tests done.
Another reason for this is the council don't carry out repairs so they have no ulterior motive to fail something that doesn't need replacing.
 
I totally agree .being that I'm upto date with my range rovers condition I always do a check as much as I can before hand . I even took the last mot with the advisory sheet still attached thought I'd put it through see if there was anything I had missed .when it went through and passed that's when I asked about last years advisorys . Maybe they was trying to make themselves more forgiving who knows .

A decent garage is just as good, its not about making extra work its more about playing to the rules. With my guys the idea of 'we could charge for that;' doesnt come into it, if its a pass its a pass, if its not its not, we do it to the rules and thats the bottom line, nothing else comes into it.

The one thing you have to remember with testers is its very much down to thier opinion, sometimes things are so border line it could go one way or the other, a decent tester will advise more of these border line items where as a dont give a **** tester wont bother, thats in my experience anyway, you would rather be told about possible future problems than live in ignorance of what could be a simple fix
 
Without wanting to be accused of spamming, I have found Hamblens Garage in Bournemouth to be the best place I have ever found for Land Rover MOT's. They know these vehicles inside out, and are very sympathetic to their little quirks and will always issue an advisory where possible for non safety critical issuses, rather than fail on silly little points.
 
There is a garage the MRs took our old golf to when I was offshore, She waited and watched him almost hammer a screw driver through the sills and failed it on a few bits, I came home had a look and the sill was almost 100% solid, went back to them to get the free retest, Bloke commented on the quality of the weld ( good welding) Second I said I do all my own work and work in engineering he scurried off with his tail between his legs.

Other garage that we now use is grand. Is more than fair and if you are there will call you over and show any areas he thinks needs advising on so you know where to go to straight away so your not hunting lol
