Enjoy 4 hours in passport control  i hated that part of the crossing into Morocco. took forever to get in and out.

thats some bad luck.

We crossed late in the day and got through in 20 minutes. You can fill in your vehicle documentation online now and get the forms on the ferry crossing for passengers. hand it all over, job done ;)

we were a bit longer on the way back and got searched, but still less than an hour.

Im back from france, was -12 degrees celcius in mid France on the way back, at 3pm in the day when its hottest!!! -5 degrees was the highest tempriture across near enough the whole country! I was quietly glad i was in the P38 with the heater and insulation and other such dark magic.

Anyway, are there any updates Andrew? Dont want this thread to get too dusty, so this is kind of a bump. Going to weld on my new suspension seats for the back springs so i can get an MOT for the trip. :D

I just tried to take the truck cab for a spin in the ice, dammed if the doors arn't frozen shut ! :D

Anyway, yes the maps arrived, my GPS arrived, but my landy is still in the paint shop :(, and I haven't done a whole lot to be fair. But I'm off for a bit, so plan to get stuck in...

We should get together and discuss a route etc, maybe decide who is going to organise what. Either you can come to my place or we can meet at a pub, are you up for that ?

Just watching Roaming Yak's DVD (I'll bring it to the pub so you can look at it too) Will bring my PC, maps, gps etc. Lets aim for back half of next week, so I can do some more homework. Will chat to Carpy, and give you a call next week. Do you know a good pub ?

OK late next week then, i know a fiew pubs around, do you want to meet somwhere half way between? Remind me where in surrey you live ive forgotten.

I'm in Richmond, but somewhere close ish to the M25 would be good for Carpy. I guess Thurs/Fri would be good for me !

Yes lets keep the pub down this end, as Carpy has broken his Land Rover, and is probably a doubtful for this meeting. And like you said, a long trek would be good training for Morocco.

I have been doing loads of homework, have a general few route options (including Griff's one), but to make sure we don't miss anything cool I have ordered another book, Morocco Overland, that has loads of routes and waypoints etc.

Carpy last seen here :D

Okay, I uploaded the free Morocco Topo map to the GPS. This map is supposed to not be routable, but I was able to route between major places, untill I got to the Draa Valley, where the GPS said no more roads, yea baby :D

I think the reason it is routing is because the Europe maps that came with my gps include major Moroccon routes, and the non routable free topo map is sitting on top of the other routable base map, and like magic the waypoints I made on the topo map can use roads from the other map to route, well I'm impressed ;)

Anyway it's not really relevant, because if we wanted to go on roads we would have stayed in the UK. So my question to Griff is how did you actually use the gps in Morocco ?

I've made tracks on Mapsource, just overlaying the pistes on the topo map, then uploaded them to the unit, seems to work well. Then you just follow the line when driving, is this what you did ?

Im sorry to hear that Carpy has starved to death in that stuck 110 then. :( When are you free Andrew, how about thursday early afternoon? Went to a nice quiet pub on top of Epsom downs the other day, can you get there easily enough?

As for no roads in Morocco, im gona invest in some waffle boards. Some nice big strong ones, i get the feeling they may come in handy. :D

Perfect, PM me the name of the pub, time, and your number, and I'll see you there.

I just bought a pair of 50mm Waffle Boards (1220mm x 310mm x 50mm), the first pair that arrived were damaged, and they sent me another pair,I know you are fairly handy, so if you want to have have a go at repairing them (they are missing a few chunks out of the outermost row) then you can have them.

Not sure, he wasn't exactly sure what he'd broken, and now he has gone silent, like Jack Bauer :p

Knowing Carpy he is probably on his way way to Wales to tow the Welsh out of the snow ;)

£2k and 4 weeks... Is that a return journey?

Has anyone only done it 1 way in the 4x4 and flogged the motor and flown home?

I am thinking it would be cool to go but time and money would be against me! Maybe a soultion is to do part of the trip and get a flight home, selling the motor somewhere in the middle of the trip. Depending on flight costs?!?!?

I could freight any expensive or key parts back home such as winch, diff lockers and other add ons that would be of use back home that would have lost too much money/depreciation to the local market in which it was sold. Or another member may be able put them in the boot till they get back to the uk?

Another idea is that if there is anyone who wanted to do it but again time and money was against them they could fly out and take the truck on the return journey!

Just an idea that I had so open to surgestions or simply abuse from people who think it is a stupid idea! lol

The waffle boards sound good, could make a mold and fiberglass it all up, would be great. :D

The place is the Tattenham Corner Beefeater (KT18 5NY), PMed phone numbers. Let me know what time is best, otherwise ill asume about 2.

Cheers, Rich.

Okay for everyone who knows they want to come with us (or is looking for their Balls - Dean :p) an update.

Rich & I met up and decided we can't be assed with tourist stuff, we are more interessted in a challenging less travelled route, something that only really becomes possible with more than one vehicle.

So we are aiming for 14-16 Days in Morocco, (Leaving early April 2010) plus like 6 days there and back.

This is the basic (as the crow flies) route :

marocroute.jpg

The actual route will include all types of desert driving, gravel plains, rocky hamada, salt lakes, sand dunes, river beds, mountain passes and canyons, and will partly follow the 2004 Paris Dakar Rally Route.

and if you still are not interessted, the weather in Tan Tan today is :

Weather for Tan Tan, Morocco

- Add to iGoogle 28°C | °F
Current: Mostly Cloudy
Wind: S at 23 km/h
Humidity: 12%

Either everyone thinks your idea is to good to even comment on, or else they think it is to stupid even to abuse :D

Not sure about the legalities of selling a UK reg car in Morocco, but pretty sure there would be issues. Then there is the potential loss you would make trying to offload the car quickly to a bunch of haggle crazy Moroccons. So wether you would actually save any time or money, by the time you have stripped the good bits and sent them home, and sent yourself home, I'm not sure

Got mapSource all up and running nicely booger, thanks for that. Any way you can seand me your route? The waffle boards are great too, im gona leave them as they are, they will get dog eared anyway. Chassis isnt looking so good though, there are some significant holes and lack of structure, the bump stops have rotten off and the axle has smased the weekened chassis where the rear bump stops used to be. Worst case will be a re-chassis, which ive wanted to do for a while, and means i can fix a fiew of the other problems that have been plaguing it. For now im trying to rebuild the broken bits, if it works i will send it for an MOT.
