well the box has gone back to ashcrofts today and lets just wait and see. i thinik that the lay shaft bearing has gone as you can move the shaft at the rear of the box but its locked up at the front to the engine.

turns out it was the lay shaft bearing had collapsed and they gave me a part refund on the box as a goodwill gesture. Cant say fairer than that. have got another box of them and its in the old girl and she is now back on the road which is good as we are going to amsterdam in 3 weeks time for my birthday.

front ,middle or rear bearing ,there was a time when decent bearings were unobtainable for a while , but **** happens even to new ones

i hear you james. i work as a heavy plant mechanic and we sometimes get new machines and have things fail on then. at the end of the day i dont think that it was anyones fault but it was nice of aschcrofts to refund me some of the money from the box so i cant really complain.

Glad it had a happy ending.
Were Ashcroft's surprised at the bearing failure on one of their g'boxes?
Any way, seems like they were "gent's" about the whole affair.
Still, 3 years isn't long, esp. if you have changed the oil every 10k.

How does the new g'box feel and hear compared to the old one?
Can you now realize there may have been some thing wrong with the old g'box before it finally threw the towel in?

Glad it all worked out, but you got me worried about my trip now :)

Hi GD,

Are you thinking about a replacement g'box, or what?
I guess it was just "unlucky" for his g'box to let go just like it did with no warning.
Hopefully, you would hear, or feel some thing not quite right, and catch it before it grenades itself.
Is your current g'box worrying you?

What is the mileage on your g'box ?

Hi big ad (and others),
I'm looking at doing a trip to Morocco with a few friends this year at pretty much the same time as the trip that you have just done and was just wondering how you found it over there over Christmas/new years? How warm was it?
Thanks in advance and I'd love to see some photos of your own trip :)

Hi Big Ad......We are also considering the Morocco Christmas / New Year option; the adventure club usually organise a trip within that time windowmay be worth considering. I would be interested in discussing the subject further, perhaps meeting up to explore possibilities. I have some details from a friend who has done this trip previously, kit list and video record etc. Are you planning to camp or B&B / Hotel?
Let me have contact details if you would like to chat.
