Diesel fuel in Morocco (Gas Oil) is approx 75p per litre. (I took 3x 20L jerry cans to brim for the journey back)
Spanish fuel is about £1.15 a litre.

Another top tip is to buy your Moroccan Dirham from eBay.
You get about twice as much than what you would at any money exchange in Morocco, as it's a closed currency.

1000 Dirham is approx £75 over there to give you a rough idea what you're getting if you go down the eBay route.

Not sure on ferry times but boat to Morocco in £200 to £300 range return and as we might cover a bit of ground I expect fuel for around 10 - 12 days in Morocco about £400 plus a bit more for bread and water!

Thanks for the info, all seems good. Just as a matter of interest, how many vehicles does it look like will be going and how many have CB radios. I'm just wandering if its worth investing in one. From what I have read they are not legal in Morocco but they turn a blind eye.

They only turn a blind eye if they're not blatantly in your face.
Before you board the ferry, remove your aerial and hand set then just cover the unit with a rag if needs be.

And whatever you do, don't use any cameras at the border control or you'll be in a world of sh*t.

depends on which way we cross the channel ! we like the idea of a sleep on the ferry from Portsmouth. The Ebay idea is good as well as the fuel in Morocco.I think a return Portsmouth to France is about £300 which we have to compare to Dover-Calais ,additional mileage, tolls and travel.

Everybody in our group did Portsmouth to Santander and back. It's a 24hr ferry crossing.
A return cost is around the £650 mark but you've only 635 miles to Gibralter with 1 toll around the £7 mark.

I will try and dig out the costs if you want, I have all the fuel and toll receipts for the drive from Algeciras in Spain to Calais.. I really liked the drive back, it depends IMO if you the time to enjoy it or not, driving 16 hours a day to rush back wont be fun but we saw some nice places, drove through amazing scenery and stayed at some great camp sites.. Andorra is a fantastic place you should definitely plan to camp there a night - we ended up spending quite a few days extra there and doing some lanes :)

Should add that the return journey was made significantly cheaper by ramming the car with about 4 jerry cans and two fuel tanks worth of cheap Moroccan fuel which took us all the way into France! I suggest you do the same :)

Just feeling the water a little to see if anyone would be interested in a trip to Morocco departing the UK on Friday the 11th April 2014, travelling through France and Spain into Morroco and back home (mechanical failure permitting) on the 27th April.

In Morrocco the trip will be into the Atlas, south west to the deserts then back up and home.

This is a bank holiday trip so only 8 days will be needed off work, that is for us Mon-Fri peeps.

This is a bit of a dash down there and back, so I know it won't be everyone's kettle of fish. But if your interested let me know.
Hi I am planning to do a similar trip in 2015 so if for any reason your trip is postponed I would be happy to team up in 2015

I regularly drive to Spain towing boat trailers and I always find that the dover Calais ferry and driving down the west coast of France the cheapest route.
with my 30 ft. trailer dover Calais return ferry is around £130 where as Santander ferry is approx. £850. The west coast of France tolls are not to bad either approx. 100 euros return but can be avoided

I don't mind the driving. I fancy calling at some of the old trucking haunts i used to frequent when driving in France / Spain.

Entering Spain through the top, Irun, and running down the west side of Madrid is our preferred route.

Sounds like a plan for Spain, I agree also about the tolls in France you can miss a lot of them, this year we spend £18 on the way down, but it did add 4 hours on the trip.

I have just done some rough calculations with the help of viamichelin.com for the Portsmouth/St Malo crossing and then on to Algeciras .
Ferry £393 return for a recliner +£60 for a cabin
St Malo-Algecires-St Malo 2312 miles,Tolls £110
Diesel in France 904 miles=36 gallons@25mpg@£5.99 gallon=£212
Diesel in Spain 1416 miles=58 gallons@25mpg@£6.29 gallon=£352
A total of £1067 for the round trip inc Ferry
The Dover Calais price is about £912 all inc but you have an extra 227 miles to drive each way
The Portsmouth-Le Havre is about £949 and about 97 miles further each way
Portsmouth-Santendere is about £969 with 1304 miles in spain only
