Can I purchase 2 manufactures winter tyres , fit 2 to front and the different 2 to the rear ? on a Freelander 2 ( 2009) or do they all need to be the same ? ( manufacturers say all the same ) I'm getting conflicting info as some indications say I can have the front and back different ( as long asboth at front are the same and both at the rearare the same ) please help ! Thank you, Phil

Why would you buy two different pairs?

Most 4wd vehicle manufacturers recommend changing all four tyres at the same time, and having the same type on all four wheels. On the fL1 it is particularly important. Not sure about the FL2 but I wouldn't be doing it.

2 different pairs second hand are less than 1/2 price, but I think I may go 4 all the same ( second hand again ) and slightly smaller 235/65/R17 to 225/65/R17 ( slightly narrower for snow driving ) .... a 4x4 friend has suggested this.

I bought a pair of 2nd hand tyres once. Both were death traps - 1 had a big bubble on the inside side wall, the other had a cut right across the tread. It obviously didn't save any money cos as soon as I found out I had to go buy new tyres.

Obviously every 2nd hand car you buy has 2nd hand tyres, but it is not likely they are selling the car because of faulty tyres - bald maybe, but that's obvious.

Agree with GG.
When you consider the tyre contact patch is the only thing between you and disaster and tyres have a shelf life and can be damaged by a previous life really easily why would you risk yours and your family's life on pre worn tyres??

If you call around you can get good deals, get a best price then call others for a match or beat price
I got 5 brand new geolander at tyres for under £400 fitted from quick fit Mobile. Didn't even have to go out for them!!

I'd think very carefully before cutting costs on tyres.

I'd buy 4 new winter tyres, which is what we do on our 2wd family vehicles.
They are pretty cheap, if you choose a budget brand, and a new budget winter tyre will perform better than a 50% worn premium winter tyres. A winter tyre isn't suitable for winter use, once it's got less than 5mm of tread anyway.
I don't bother with winter tyres on my LRs, as they are just fine in the winter conditions we see. I just use M&S rated tyres, which get the job done for me.

Size wise, it makes no difference on grip, just stick with the standard size, all year round.
