Just about to purchase 4 new tyres 225/55/17. Got Pirelli ST currently but have heard the Mitchellins are a superior tyre and will last longer. Theres not a lot of difference in price.

I am one of the few to have experienced both sets of tyres on my Freelander 2004 model. My Vehicle came as standard with Mitch tyres and 17inch alloys and they were good tyres at first, however I found that they were not really as good as people suggested as they are quite expensive and I feel they were fast.Mine lasted 31,00 miles and then I replaced all four tyres with pirelli scorp ST tyres which I find very good as well.

Mitch syncrone tyres:
-Supposed better for off roading!I have used both off road in mud and sand and dont see a problem with either as long as you can drive a freelander off road.
-Rugged look.
-Suppose to last much longer, this is hit and miss look at mine for example.
-Stone disloging ridges:stones still get stuck and dont dislodge so not sure if it works well as tyres age.

Pirelli Scorp ST:
-Stylish design with more on road handling, better grip!
-Not as good off road, though I have not found and problems with either make.
-quiter ride at first but meant to get noisy as tyre gets older, however this is more of a problem with 18" wheels found on sports models.Mine are still within the year so are very quiet.
-I thing these are slightly cheaper.

Statistic wise Mitchs are better but in reality I find Pirellis are much beta so far. Both tyres offer great protection against tyres. I have never had a puncher on any of my Freelanders over 6 year period and they do off road in some pretty hairy locations from time to time.

hope that helps

Not a Freelander I know, but I had Mich XPC's on my Disco, and they managed 60k+ miles . . brilliant, but Mr Mich got wind that peeps only ever bought one set, so they stopped making 'em.:(

Got BF AT's now, and they're brilliant, if you can get them in 225/55/17 then go for them, typical life is 80k miles upwards, and they are very good off road in all but the real deep gooey stuff

Also consider a size change, it give you more choice, and if you calc it properly it won't upset your speedo - mine is actually more acurate now (comparing with my sat nav)

I have the Pirelli at the moment so think I will stick with them - i like the on road grip they seems to give even when cornering hard. They come in about 20-35 quid per tyre cheaper and are still a desent option. If they we're going to give much higher mileage then probably worth the Mitch.

Had considered changing the size but I like the look of them and it handles so much better than our work Freelander which is on smaller tyres.

Can't belive it's best part of £450 for four tyres!

Anyone know of a cheap place for tyres? Best I can find is £114 - charlie browns.

They dont make the Syncrone tyres anymore :(

the michelin website still shows the synchrone as a current tyre, and quite a few tyre dealers are still offering it on their websites, although I haven't tried ringing them yet

I tried to get one last month with no luck had to get a full new set of michelin lattitude HP's which on road are a lot better :)

Nobody rate Goodyear Wranglers anymore?

My last pair wore out very quickly (lucky if I got 10,000 off the fronts and they were down to 2 mm)

My father managed to get 31,000 out of his on his Discovery, but they were all down to wear bars by then.

Most folk on here tend to agree that they wear quickly.

Steve

Steve - what size are you running then??

I'm a fan of XPC's too!! I have four mounted on a spare set of rims and two brand new 'in stock' in my loft. That should last me a while :)

Anyone run other 4x4 tyres 225 55 17 with much success? I;ve seen a few other cheaper brands - don't know what they are like on the landy. Kumho seem to do one at around 80 a tyre.

Becomes a big expense on tyres as these cars get older - soon the tyres will be worth more than the car!

I've been impressed with Colway A/T's. Driven through some very sticky stuff in a Disco 2 and not got stuck yet. To be honest I dont ever hear the traction control come on - used to be permanently working when driving on Goodyear Wrangler HPs!!

Try link below for prices.
