I am getting really frustrated with my R reg 1997 Discovery 300TDI it will not start now.
In recent weeks I have experienced an intermittent fault of won't start / will start. The key fob seems to be working ok central locking & immobiliser warning lights all ok, engine turns over ok but it will not fire.
I have read lots of information / experiences by other Landyzone members who seem to have had the same symptoms / problem as me and cured it by replacing the spider located in the dash underneath radio.
I have seen pictures of the spider and its location in the dash taken by another memebr so know what and where to look for it, but I don't have one there on my Disco.
Does anyone know if it located elswhere on some models? or is it possible that Land Rover did not fit them to all Disco models?, and if this is the case any ideas where the fault might be?.
I did read of a member who did a quick fix by putting a temporary power supply to the fuel pump solenoid, but mine appears to be different to his, his had just a single wire to it,where mine has three wires. Does any one know is a similar quick fix can be done to the later type?.
I know there is lots of information on this subject and my bleary eyes feel like they have read it all, but if there is anyone who can add anything else your help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not 100% sure it is the immobiliser but think it is electrical / immobiliser related because when the intermittent fault first appeared , I could turn the key in the ignition all warning lights working normally, then crank it over with the starter working ok and it would not fire, try again 1 minute later and it would start and run perfectly with no hint of any fuel interruption or starvation no coughing or spluttering ever.
This situation continued with it happening once every couple of days for about 4 / 5 weeks until it finally it would not start at all last Saturday. The vehicle is always kept well serviced and I know the fuel and air filter are clean. but having said that I am not a mechanic and very appreciative of your interest in my problem, if you think I'm getting ahead of my self and should be looking elsewhere please advise, thank you.

Had the same problem with my 300tdi, tried the above and it worked, later found out that I had a shagged ingnition switch, as my username states, i'm learning slowy :)

I was Just about to check if the fuel solenoid switch is getting power as you suggested and it started up and is running sweet as a nut, but I'm not kidding my self the fault will return very soon. problem is trying to trace the fault when it is not there. All very frustrating.

I had the dreaded spider problem 2 weeks ago. The difference is,my disco didn't turn over at all. I had the spider re soldered by a bloke who does lr diagnostics etc, and it seems to have done the trick. I suspect yours is a different problem as your engine turns over.
Landrover did stop using the spriders, but i'm not sure when, mine is a 96P 300.

Your car has the later DDS type of immobilisation,so it wont have a spider. If you look at the unit bolted to the back of the injector where the three wires go in you will see it is held on by two shear headed bolts. You need to get them out to remove the DDS block, underneath is the ordinary stop solenoid as fitted to the earlier models.Bin the DDS block and use the wire that comes live with ignition to go straight to the solenoid.
You will lose the immobilisation function but at least it will be reliable.

To eightinavee,
My Disco failed completely and I have not been able to start it for over a week. Finally got round to removing the DDS block from the stop solenoid today. it was exactly as you said.
It was fairly awkward drilling out the shear bolts had to use a right angled drill, and could not see how the little wire terminates at the solenoid underneath , I cut the wire at the DDS block which just left me a couple of inches of wire attached to the solenoid. Then using a connector I attached it to the wire which comes live with the ignition. Now its starting fine I'm up and running again. Thank you very much for the excellent information you were spot on.
