Hi,
We had a 1999 Freelander 2L Di about 8 years ago
Had problems with drive-train, water pump, core plugs, etc etc and finally it died with a turbo internal oil leak runaway on the motorway as my wife was taking her employees to a meeting

Well obviously I want another and am going to look at some now
Going to go for a Mk1 Td4, 2001 or newer, manual, 5 door
Found one for a reasonable price for here (5.5.K Euros, PT is very expensive 2nd hand cars) and with under 100K miles, and am hence wary
So I'm looking for hints and cant find the below post (perhaps by Hippo?):

You are not being stupid wanting another we have had freelanders now from the year 2000 my wife’s is a 1998 1800 Petrol and yes it has had the head gasket done I am on my second td4 although I have a problem with mine which nobody seems to know the answer to. The best thing is a thoughra inspection first make sure the prop shaft is still on Do a one wheel up test another hippo one , make sure it has been service regular check all the tyres are the same make all round if you can take it for a test drive that is the best and the best of all get a later one with less mileage if you can some more will come on and give you more advise I am sure
 
Would it not be cheaper to import a better priced FL1 from the UK? You can get a good condition 2005 TD4 HSE in the UK for well under €5.5K.

The TD4 FL1 does have it's share of problems. The engine is OK but not a reliable as the old L series was.

Import is not worth it, despite all the financial apparent incentives- PT charges huge import tax (called registration fee to avoid EU fines) and driving a RHD here is a pain (yes I have done all combinations for years at a time and my wife has to drive it in Lisbon - If you have driven in Lisbon you know what I mean)
And Bureaucracy - well, us Brits know how to have a moan about the UK but you have no idea :)
I've looked into this for years, and I have the advantage of my 'retired' old man working (still, at 76, good on him!) at Manheims after a career as a (1960's) factory trained LR & jag mechanic.
I keep hearing this about the L series, but we didnt have a great experience and have also seen lots saying go for Td4 so going to have a go
Going to have a look now - will look for all the usual, and then if I like it, well, as ever its a lottery!

Missing posts... the forum was updated to a new platform about a year ago. The format of linking to fred's has changed. This is how to find them by converting the old link:

Links to freds are made up of the fred link number and an optional post link number. The fred link takes yer too the fred. Including the optional post number takes yer directly to that particular post on that fred.

Using these eggsample numbers:
fred number = 63164
post number = 1620217

Old style link to fred:

Old style link to a specific post:
ht**tps://ww**w.landyzone.co.uk/1620217-post9

New style link to fred:

I haven't worked out how to link to a specific post if you only know the post number without the fred number. The winner gets a curly wurly.

If yer link to a fred int past then it will automatically take yer to the same fred and change the link. If yer linked to a specific post (like I often do) it dun't automatically work in the same way.

Will look to see what I should have looked for .... my fault for late posting but it came up suddenly.
Just bought 2001 Freelander Td4 95K miles. Engine sounds good. Drives well. Clutch seems good. No drivetrain or other clunks or whiny noises. Slight resistance in reverse on full lock, but have read that this is normal for the VCU. Clean enough. No rust. Same price as others with 150K. We like it. Fingers crossed.
Will be back on the forum again. But hopefully not too much :)

It's no problem. I knew the linking issue was a problem but didn't realised how many links I have put up over the years and need to fix a lot of them.

Nice to hear yer got yerself a hippo ;)
