Hi I am new to land rovers and was trying to fix starter motor earth when I noticed a possible missing bolt, sump plug? was hoping someone would know if a bolt or sump plug was missing and what it is missing from? any help appreciated. It is a 1999 land rover discovery tdi and photo's were took from under neath between front wheels. thank you in advance. cheers lee

If, it's a manual gearbox it should be like that, its open so to allow oil leaking from an iffy seal to drain from the bell housing and also give an indication of that iffy seal, oil which could contaminate the clutch.
If or when you go wading in deep water there's a screw called a 'wading plug, that should be screwed in to stop the ingress of water.
Much the same as your timing case at the front of the engine where again you will find a hole.

All the info is in the owners handbook, :) and it looks as if you have a bad oil leak somewhere already :(
