It feels as though my 300tdi is running on 3 cylinders when accelerating from 1800 rpm to about 2500 rpm. It feels worst in 2nd gear when pulling hard up hill. Its not so apparent in the higher gears and doesn't seem to affect the performance very much. Any idea where I should start to look? Mileage is 144.000 and this fault seems to have appeared quite suddenly.

Hi if you suspect it's running on 3 cylinders you need to do a compression test to see if theres a block/ring problem. (This can be done at home)

check the pump (mechanical fixed to the block) or (Electronic where ever they fitted them) get this checked to see if it's correctly working then check to see if the injectors are firing (You cannot do this at home)

Check the Glow plugs and wiring to all (I suspect theres a fuse there somewhere which controls part of the engine.

Failing that the compression test will tell you if theres a major failure such as head gasket

Charlotte,

I have put a can of injector cleaner in the tank and it has improved a lot, but it is still not right. I will try the compression test next and see what happens.
Thanks
Dave.

Check at the bach of the cylinder head, this is were 300 goes when head gasket starts to leak normally that is,also check to see if any intercooler hoses are going duff,no fuel leaks anywhere?

This turned out to be a bad batch of fuel. Filled up again and its now fine :)
Wonder what was "bad" about it - I'd check your fuel filter if I was you. You didn't put PETROL in it did you? A mix of petrol and diesel can have that sort of effect.

Sometimes careless fuel companies and delivery drivers make a mess of organising fuels ..... and we get a heap of the wrong stuff in the tanks.

They wouldn't bother a lot about some petrol in a load of diesel.
